Generalist World is, by far, the most engaged, helpful and valuable community I’ve been a part of (online or in-person). The people here, have a true appreciation of each other because of our shared experience: we’ve felt lost in the professional world because our diverse set of skills and experiences don’t fit the traditional model of a specialist employee. If you’re in search of a place to learn, grow and navigate how to embrace the value unlocked because you are a generalist, just sign up. Full stop.

I joined Generalist World because of the infectious spirit of possibility, care and optimism that I saw in the public-facing side of the community - I was at a stage where I was going fractional, buying into a business and working across teams - and I was looking for a place, a common thread of community in my working life to call home - to ground me and to be able to share the parts of myself openly and to learn from. I wanted to find people who shared some similar ‘theories of work and change’ as I did - that you can always start over, build something, learn something, try something…. And a year in, I have to saw that I have found more than I hoped for. Consistent real connection and collaboration - a positive optimism and a figuring-it-out together spirit. GW has become that place for me - it’s truly special and deeply, deeply human.

Video transcript: There's thousands of us out there while we're under this great big generalist umbrella. There's specialist generalists within us, right? There are those who are, you know, entrepreneurs. There are those of us who are creatives. But learning from how everyone does everything is just amazing. To your point, Like Sharon, with this crazy Ph.D. the most brilliant. I literally have to pause and take so much time to read the things he posts because I have to use my brain in a different way to do that, because he's so brilliant. And then you've got someone like Robert, who will just ask you questions and turn your mind upside down. And then you're like, oh, my God, how did I not think of this? Right? Yeah, it's really the strange community. And knowing that we're there and that we are all in the same boat, although very different.

Oh where do I start here?! I was feeling defeated after spending 2 months on unemployment and staring at job applications and job descriptions on LinkedIn for hours and hours a day. I felt like I didn't fit into any of the roles and I was beginning to think that there was something innately wrong with me. I had been in strategy and marketing for a few years but I wasn't qualified enough for almost every job that came across my computer screen. Then I came across the concept of a "generalist" and starting doing my research. A quick LinkedIn search brought me to the Generalist World page and so I followed it. Content came pouring onto my LinkedIn feed about being a generalist, with many individuals validating the content. Seeing so many people feel similarly to me made me feel like I was already part of something bigger. It was the morning of my 31st birthday and I decided to join Generalist World. My goal was to just meet others who considered themselves generalists and learn from them. A few hours after joining, I got a welcome video on Slack from Milly that made me smile. It was only about a month after joining that I landed my now current role as Chief of Staff to the CMO at a growing FinTech company called Addepar. Generalist World was literally the validation and catalyst that I needed to be able to find the right role for me. I spent hours talking to others in the community on 1:1s; testing out my new professional narrative and way I was describing myself. I was given tips, tricks, and advice on how to tell my generalist story in a confident and impactful manner. I've never been part of a more welcoming, warm, and supportive professional community in my entire life. Generalist World has changed the way I think about my career, my life, and the communities that I belong to. I went from a job that I didn't really feel passionate about and a company that was toxic for me and moved into a role that feels like it was built for me and a company that aligns with my values (both personal and professional). I couldn't thank Milly and the team more for the work they are doing in building Generalist World. If you are on the job hunt or believe even for a second that you may be a Generalist, I recommend you join Generalist World as soon as possible. Your perspective will change right before your very eyes and you will feel like a more authentic, purposeful version of yourself. Thank you GW!

I have written multiple novel length reviews trying to explain the impact GW has had on me in a relatively short amount of time. As someone who has joined multiple clubs and cohorts and bootcamps and associations, Generalist World is the first one I'm legitimately excited to renew. Speaking only for myself, being a generalist has been incredibly lonely. I felt shame for how my brain works, and an immense load of imposter syndrome for being in my career this long without specializing. Then I come to a community full of people who just get it, because they're the same way. A community who loves to uplift and share information, with no sense of malice or competition. On top of that, the GW team is spectacular. The generalist movement isn't just a banner they fly as a lead gen tool, it's an actual movement they're actively involved in promoting on a literal global scale. Every project launched is for the enrichment and edification of generalists. On top of a podcast and networking events and a vast library of resources, they are currently dismantling the entire specialist focused hiring process infrastructure and rebuilding it to showcase the value of the generalist. Generalist World has helped me reshape how I see myself, and how I see my place in the world of the future.

Generalist World is a network of systems thinkers whose career paths have defied linear norms. This welcoming, international community has a wealth of wisdom, optimism, advice, and curiosity. In the few days that I've been a part of the group, I have already found greater career clarity and confidence than I have had in years.

There are few places in the world where you immediately feel at home and amongst kin; that share the same mindset, willing to help and be honest enough to not sugar coat the hard truth. I found this in Generalist world. I found GW in the early days of inception, when I've been ashamed to be a generalist. For many years. "What do you do?" has been one of the most difficult questions to answer. Saying "everything needed to get things done" had negative connotations. Then I found this global base where others feel the same. But I was in awe when I see how some of the team have managed to make it their superpower! Wait, what? I didn't know that was possible! Milly has created a community from all walks of life and all stages of life. It's like having a hive mind of super intelligence at your fingertips. While people may be raving about ChatGPT, they have not seen GW. GW is the human version. Complete with empathy and real life experience. I am now proud to say I'm a generalist. Because now, I know I'm not alone.

Video transcript: I had the pleasure of going to one of the Chicago meetups and just being like, oh, these are my people. And getting to hear some of people's experience who are actually community members. And I think there was just still a lot of spaciousness. I mentioned earlier, one of my biggest conflicts was feeling like I didn't have a place where I belonged in many parts of my career. And this is a place where I do feel like I belong. There are people who have full time jobs, there are people who are business owners, there are people who are portfolio careers. And even if not everyone's career looks exactly like mine. And really that's kind of the whole thing with a generalist, is that you're having a one on one career. I can talk about having multiple things happening and no one bats an eye. It's not like, wait, what are you doing? And so kind kind of similar to what you were saying with being on a panel and feeling comfortable enough, taking up space. It feels like a space where I can take up space and bring the nuances in the intricacies of my career without being worried about people having blank stares or like tilting their head in confusion. No, you'll just end up in the heck yeah channel. Like.

When I first came across Milly and her idea, I was frankly, shocked. It was like finding out that I had a secret half-sister (and later whole community-family) that had been kept hidden from me my whole life. Were there REALLY other people like me out there!? (Me, 🥲 crying tears of joy). I joined because I was truly, truly lonely, and had been beating myself up for a long, long time about being non-linear. I couldn't wait to be part of GW. I've made some wonderful online and offline friendships, developed - over several years - a completely different (improved) self-view of myself: the understanding that I am not deficient as a person but actually a rockstar in systems thinking. The GW community is something that I look forward to opening every morning in Slack to see what cool things people are sharing, helping where I can, and getting cross-pollinated from other talented people 💜 🎁 🐝🐝🐝

One thing about GW you'll see as soon as you join: it's a "yes and" community. Yes, it's incredibly positive... and the people are more helpful and generous with their time and advice beyond any expectation. Yes, it's gonna celebrate your every win... and also potentially serve as the exact source of your next one, thanks to a shared job ad, a collaboration, or a connection of a connection. It's so incredibly welcoming--your eclectic self will love it.

Video transcript: I am a fairly new member of Generalist World, having been on it for about two months now, and in the last eight weeks I think I have met so many interesting people, had so many interesting conversations, felt validated, supported, heard, and I think it's just a magical space on Slack through the videos that they offer. The skill sets that people bring are so diverse. The experiences, the conversations are rich and abundant. There's never a lack of interesting things to find out about people just by virtue of them not having been in a niche and not having done the same thing for 30 years. And there's real value in that because you don't need icebreakers when you're in a room full of people that have so many interesting insights, so many fun things, and so many creative ideas to share. I'm just absolutely amazed at how much enriched and how much more joyous my life feels having interacted with some of these individuals and getting to know some of them even better. So if you are a person who has a lot of diverse interests, who thinks of themselves as containing multitudes, who've done a lot of different things and don't feel like there's a category for you, then Generalist World is the place to be.

I love the growth mindset percolating through every corner of the community, with questions, support, and knowledge sharing becoming almost like oxygen in our little tank. While I interact with maybe 10% of the content and offerings, I appreciate the variety of options to engage, find accountability buddies, receive guidance and give back.

Most professional spaces are so restrictive, GW was expansive. I found a community that was exactly what I needed to grow, a room full of accomplished professionals that intimidated me a little but were incredibly friendly. I practice in GW what I then take out into the world and it's the most energizing, inspiring, and supportive group of people. After having talked to so many people one-on-one, I also started doing this IRL, and now I just show up like this everywhere and this wouldn't have been possible if it wasn't for being able to do this unguarded inside GW.

As someone who's worked in IT for 16 years, many looking in would think my area of expertise was clear.

However, I've never found myself drawn to a particular title... Digital Transformation Consultant, Service Manager, Product Management, Platform Owner.... it continues

'I fix problems that are adjacent to technology where the fix is rarely more technology.' is what Claude has suggested my job might be.

Last year I came across Milly's community Generalist World 🌀, where others defined themselves not as job titles but around capabilities.

What started as an online quiz turned into joining a lovely, diverse and wonderful online community, and today was my 4th meeting (in a 4th country, in 4 months... this was not intentional) of meeting some of that community in person.

Hope to see you all again soon

Huge appreciation post! A few weeks ago, I went to Angela Bierman with an issue I needed help with. Angela and I connected on Generalist World 🌀 and totally got what I was trying to explain and why I couldn’t figure my next steps out. Sometimes being stuck means living with a heaviness and I couldn’t seem get unstuck or feel lighter. Angela was so fab as looking at things with a new perspective, creating a way for me to honestly reflect. And then it wasn’t so complicated. It ended up being a piece of yummy cake in fact! Now, I am back in motion with a few things and celebrating small wins straight away with cake, eating it, instead of saving it. It wasn’t more effort that would get me to where I wanted to go, it was the angles. So when you need to revise those angles, check out Angela’s Block Buster sessions and go eat your cake of choice! Thanks v much Angela! ID: Short haired woman wearing a lime loose shirt, black rimmed glasses, pale pink thumb braces, sits in a cafe and is about to eat a purple pastry cake. Behind her on the counter the works “Lets make that cake sparkle” is blurry but just about seen. The cake was an ube passionfruit cake and was delicious.

I am so glad I saw one of Milly's posts about Generalist World on LinkedIn! Refusing to put myself in a box and instead continuously expanding my skills and what I can offer to the world, I took the plunge and joined the GW community. Ever since I have been experiencing their Slack workspace as an immensely rich buzzing hub minus the corporate constraints. This is networking at its best: focused on the human side, calm, generous, sharing, where you get seen and matched to the right people and opportunities almost magically. Milly's "Welcome home" on her welcome email truly struck a cord. If you feel like all job descriptions you are reading are too narrow, GW may be a good fit for you. GW is definitely worth the investment and has a bright future in front of it in the highly uncertain world we live in.

I've been through so many career pivots and I'm not one 'thing' - very much an Operator who has worked in lots of different environments. Generalist World is one of the few places were this is both normalised and celebrated. There's always someone in there who is willing to help, lend an ear or experielmnet alongside you. Generalist World is one of the best communities I'm a part of.

I'm a big believer of the universe pointing us to things and people in moments of greatest need and that's what GW feels was for me. I joined primarily because of the vibe that Milly and Ece emanate: warm, supportive, welcoming, honest, no-bullshit; and the general philosophy that "weird and scattered is ok" and that "nothing is wrong with you if you don't fit into a box"! It inspired me to start talking about it more myself, and sharing that message in my circle of friends and clients. I don't think I've had a single conversation since I joined where I didn't mention the GW Community. There are a couple of things I deeply appreciate: 1. Encouragement to move at your own pace and find things from the buffet that work for you at this moment. No pressure, no rush, no high-intensity is what everyone needs more of. 2. The extreme level of detail with which the onboarding process has been put together. The Lounge has SUCH a wealth of resources, so thoughtfully put together that it leaves me speechless (and I drool like Homer Simpson) every time I go in there. 3. That it's a lifetime membership. Honestly - in this world of technofeudalism, it is SO refreshing to be a part of something that pulls to the opposite direction! It shows that it IS possible to operate in a different way which makes it genuinely inspiring and creates a ripple effect. When I grow up, I wanna be like Milly. ♡ Feel free to cut/paste/edit as needed!

My favorite thing about being part of the community is the people!! GW is full of kind, smart, & talented humans who readily offer up their expertise to help each other. I love this space for the creative, thought-provoking conversations and the real friendships you build along the way. Also, when so much feels up in the air, being part of a community where you feel supported, accepted, and seen matters more than ever… and that’s what GW has become for me. Milly, Ece, and the GW team truly deserve all the ✨ sparkles and snaps ✨ for building a one-of-a-kind online community ❤️

1. Got to talk to and meet more people interested in a variety of things like me (like business building, reading, community building, AI - the mix is deelish) 2. The energy - super warm and friendly generally

I joined GW last Summer and it's since become my favourite community to be part of. After years of building a specialist career in financial services, I had come to the realisation that my skills, experience and interest were much broader - I happened to find GW right at that inflection point, and joining the community allowed me to embrace my generalism with excitement and pride. It also fed my curiosity - the simple fact of learning about other people's journeys (in career and life) and being able to share stories, bounce around ideas and learn new things has been invaluable. For example, I know for a fact that my learning curve on AI has been much steeper than what it would have been had I not been part of GW - because of the wealth of experience on the topic within the community. Not only that - I recently went into building a business solo, after years of being in large corporate environments, and GW has enabled me to build new relationships and feel I have a 'tribe', which is such an important factor in sustaining myself at this stage. Lastly, I really appreciate the ethos and culture centred around helping and supporting each other.

I'm a relatively new member, having joined back in March, but I love how supportive and unapologetically genuine and *real* people are. There's almost an unspoken understanding that you don't need to mask who you are, and that you don't need to pretend to be someone that you're not. I'm hopeful that GW will open up more opportunities for me in the future. I've gotten a lot out of being part of GW thus far.

On a random scroll on Tiktok my life changed. Some time ago, while doom scrolling, I came upon a lady talking about different ways to see your career and how we don’t need all of us to follow the same straight line. That was Milly, and since then my life has changed. For me, this is not just a professional community. Is where problems are being solved and dreams are being encouraged. Since I joined the community, I have been in a learning journey. Part of it through the unboxing, part of it through everyone else.

I'd describe GW as: cosy, inspiring, catalysing. I've met so many inspiring, interesting, and amazing people from different corners of the world and it has given me the permission to think bigger, and step out of my comfort zone to try new things. I have been trying to fit myself into boxes and roles, but it never really felt right. So to find so many like-minded people navigating similar journeys of making their own squiggly career path has been invigorating! At the same time, it is cosy because there isn't a pressure to be "on" all the time. GW's small but mighty team are great role models in creating this culture, respecting each of our individual seasons of ebb and flow.

I'm sorry but the world no longer belongs to specialists…

The new world belongs to the people who can see connections others can’t, and problem-solve in a whole new level.

Ever since joining Generalist World 🌀 I’ve met so many multi‑talented, overqualified people who simply don’t fit in a box (either because they can’t shrink themselves to fit one, or because the thought of doing just one thing sounds like slow death by boredom 🫠). In other words, my people 🥹

The pattern I see among great generalists is not that they know “a bit of everything”.

🌀 It’s that they can do multiple things well.

And, more importantly, they connect all these things in ways that create solutions no siloed expert could have imagined.

In the age of AI, where deep specialism is increasingly automated or accessible, what remains uniquely human is the ability to synthesize, translate, and create context across disciplines.

❗️It's not that experts are not valuable anymore, but it's that their value is shifting from the depth of their specialism to how they apply it across disciplines to solve problems in new, multidimensional ways.

So… this is why I think the world no longer belongs to those who focus on one thing, but to those who can connect multiple things in ways it hasn't been done before.

💭 Are you a generalist or a specialist?
How do you see that shaping your value in the next few years?

They give me reality checks when I need them. Like, Tara, why do you actually think that that's not really true? And they. Yeah, they just are so supportive, really strong, brainstorming people with me, like, it's team that I needed. Been a real game changer for me because I can keep doing my solo entrepreneur thing because I've got a team behind me now.

The past few weeks, I've been #Unboxed 🎁 - You know, learning never stops!

Are you a dreamer, an overachiever, an organiser, a creative, the glue, confused, the non- traditional,....

Are you often labelled this way or any other way at work?

I take pride in most of these titles :)

You get to choose the title that you want to choose.

As I've said countless times here, I don't have a linear career path and by the looks of it, I never will.

Also, I know that there is NO single path to success; I've experienced this myself.

The past few weeks, I've been Unboxed. The program by Generalist World 🌀 was a great reminder of a lot of things that I already believed in.

Great interactions with people who are so massively talented in their own way!

Some aspects covered - Storytelling, Skills stacking, pitching, creating tiny experiments, atomic influence and more. Gosh! I needed this nudge and support.

And now here I am, motivated to continue to be my unique self and tell YOU-reading this, that being authentic, taking small steps towards your goals, being consistent and surrounding yourself with the RIGHT kind of people is the way to go!

Thank you beautiful community Generalist World 🌀. I would tag each one of you if I could. You inspire me!

Video transcript: I joined generalist world about a year and a half ago after following Millie on LinkedIn for a while. All the messaging was totally resonating with me and I identified as being a generalist, so I wanted to get inside and see what it was all about and it's been brilliant. I have learned so much from this community, whether it's just being in the Slack channel, chatting away. You learn pick up tips for interviews, you pick up tech tips, you pick up tips on how to handle situations at work, you pick up tips on problem solving. There is just knowledge being shared all over the place. It's fantastic and everybody is so helpful and kind and just really gets each other, which is a really nice feeling. And then the generalist world team have so much great content to share that you can access as a member. So the events recently have been fantastic with people like Wes Cow and Harry dry, really, really kind of on point content to help you accelerate your career. Then there's things like the generalist world job hunting book, which has been really, really helpful to me and just some of the connections I've made in there have been really lovely too. There are people that I've stayed in touch with, people that cheer me along, give me great advice. I just feel like I'd be lost without them now.

Good intentions? Check ✅ But here's the real question: Who's keeping you in check? Our latest dive into the 🌀Generally Curious world with Kat Gabrielle & Khanyisa Mnyaka, Milly Tamati and I didn’t just chat – we got downright blunt about what it means to really hold each other accountable. It's easy to say you've got good intentions, but when the rubber meets the road, who’s actually checking you? With DEI efforts getting the axe left and right and the world feeling like a bit of a dumpster fire, it’s more important than ever to be mindful of our impact on each other. Every interaction is a chance to do better, to be better. So, who’s got your back in making sure you’re not just talking the talk, but walking the walk too? Let's not just aim for good. Let's strive for meaningful impact, with eyes wide open to the responsibilities it entails 💗 Shout out to Rohab Aamir for the visual summary ✏

I started listening to 🌀Generally Curious from the moment it hit the air waves and each episode leaves me hungry for more. I'm only half way through this episode and I have three knock-out quotes I'm taking with me (so far): ❤️ "I have to love the stuff that I think is unlovable too." ▶ ▶ Wow! What a mic drop in the episode! I have spent most of my life trying to focus on the 'good' parts of me and avoid, skip, or override the 'bad'. What I worked on in therapy is to understand that there are no bad parts and to be curious about why those parts of me show up. The parts are telling a story, I just have to listen. 😨 It's cute to say until you f*cking sit with the discomfort. ▶ ▶ It bubbles up in my chest. It burns in my stomach. The tingles crawl up my spine and into my brain. I'm antsy and overwhelmed with sensations and feelings that are hard to describe. Until... I ask myself what the feeling is telling me. 💃 It's your responsibility to show up in your fullness. ▶ ▶ YES! 👏 I am extra - like guacamole 🥑 in your Chipotle burrito. I cost more because I am worth more. I am loud and introspective. I am silly and serious. I can dance on the surface of a networking conversation, or wrap you in my arms with a bear hug when a wave of grief hits unexpectedly. I'm confident the next half of this podcast is going to be just as full of top tier quotes too! If you haven't given it a listen, what are you waiting for?

Securing a spot just an hour before the GW community closed its doors was a stroke of luck. Milly encouraged me to check out the community and even offered a 30-day refund policy if it didn't work out. Having been here for 2 weeks, I can confidently say that being part of this incredible community has been an absolute game-changer for me. What truly sets GW apart is its members. People here are very altruistic, sharing their insights and experiences freely, fostering a culture of collaboration and growth. Everyone has been incredibly supportive since day one, making me feel like I've finally found my professional home. Another aspect that stands out from previous professional organizations I have been in is the onboarding process. Milly, Ece, and Nikita have put a lot of thought into it, curating a seamless experience, breaking down information into bite-sized pieces, and offering actionable steps each day. It's made diving into the community effortless and enjoyable. If you're considering joining, I wholeheartedly recommend it. The sense of belonging and the wealth of support and resources make it a truly invaluable community to be a part of. I'm grateful for the opportunity and excited for what lies ahead.

The other week I posted about genuine connection being the primary need for improved mental health throughout society. 🌀 This week, I saw a huge spike in happiness when I had the opportunity to join and meet with an INCREDIBLE group of individuals from Generalist World. This community of thoughtful, talented, squiggly, and enthusiastic people from around the world is exactly what I needed - and I can't wait to continue to ride this high and build new genuine connections.

The GW Job Hunt Guidebook is the resource I wish I had when I was last on the job hunt. I struggled for a long time to craft a narrative around my career journey and clearly articulate the unique value that I bring to organizations. Now I have a much better understanding about how to design my CV and portfolio to attract the kinds of organizations that I want to work with.

ICYMI, I was on Milly Tamati & Lindsey Lerner's podcast Generally Curious earlier this month. I've received more feedback on this episode than any pod I've done in the past (normally, it's just my mom texting me). We talked about: - Identifying your spiky traits - Thinking about fit & context rather than strengths & weaknesses - Creating a personal monopoly - How to think about generalists vs specialists Hope you enjoy! 🤹🏼 There are many negative views toward generalists - people with a wide range of interests and competencies. "Jack of all trades, master of none". Jumping from one thing to another. Shallow… These views of society shaped me. In the past, I was always striving for mastery and tirelessly searching for  that one perfect job that would finally make me happy. I felt relieved when I first discovered Generalist World research - it was so much about me. It spoke to me deeply and gave me more confidence in establishing my career path. I am overjoyed to now be able to identify as a generalist and recognise myself (and other fantastic people) for who we are: 🌟 Big picture thinkers  🌟 Exceptionally agile problem solvers who excel in rapidly changing environments 🌟 Quick learners who are among the first to recognise new trends 🌟 Creative connectors who bridge the gap between seemingly unrelated fields   🌟 Empathetic souls due to the breadth of their experience Linking the research here: lnkd.in/dWCy8d8T If you relate, I highly recommend the Generalist World newsletter and blog. Consider them for cross-functional opportunities/promotions that come up - don’t rely on a linear growth plan. trust that they will learn any skills needed quickly and your org will be better for having more well-rounded leaders in the company

Believe that our transferable skills truly are transferable and that the insatiable urge to learn and grow leads us to seek roles with growth opportunities. If I check all the boxes, I'll be bored in 6 months. Give plenty of room to work cross-functionally and take on projects. At the same time, create a safe space for the person to admin something is not in their wheelhouse or they don't want it to be.

I'd say clear expectations.  As a generalist I can take something any number of ways, and understanding what the desired outcome is incredibly helpful, for example to not get too strategic on something that just requires an action plan to get it moving.

I would say remember generalists can do a range of things well so give them opportunities to be involved, contribute and even lead projects/areas that may not necessarily fall under the direct remit you hired them for.  Definitely include them with strategy and and any key problem solving meetings, and just generally (lol pun) give them space to move and flex that muscle. Work with them to better support their work and watch that 10x results.

I like to remind myself that knowing that there's a lot that I don't know ensures that I am always open to learning, growing, and changing my mind - and that's a great thing! So that's what I tell my imposter syndrome - thanks, yes it's true that there's always more to know and learn, but I trust that I am in this room for a reason, and if I have a perspective that I feel called to share, I'll share it and be prepared to grow, learn, or change my mind based on the feedback I receive.

Stop before you start. Every time I get imposter syndrome I try to mentally pause and 3Rs. Reframe "I don't know what I am doing" = I get to learn something new. "X people will realise" = I get to ask them to explain the nuance of the idea building a relationship. Realisation As a generalist you will have seen this before in another form and I know what to do then. Reality You didn't lie or misrepresent yourself to get here as such people know what to expect and brought you in anyway. As such focus on what you do bring to the party now not what you don't quite yet, that is why you are there.

This community has given me a sense of belonging and a platform to connect with like-minded individuals. The community cafe in Generalist World is my favorite. We can all recognise genuineness when we see it — and in my case, I happened to meet a refreshingly authentic leader, Milly, at a conference for community builders in Prague. And that’s how I came across GW: the founder herself told her story, beaming with optimism and exuding a passion for bringing people together that I had never seen before. I talked with her afterwards and knew I had to join whatever it was she was creating. I’m so glad I did… Sure, people all over the world have attempted to create digital communities which fuel themselves by way of ‘natural’ engagement, and while I’ve joined a number of slacks and discord servers across different channels and subjects, I had never found one that made me actually want to come back and check for updates. It always ended with ‘do not disturb’ until I forgot about it altogether. In GW, every single time I ask a question, post about a struggle or get excited about something and just want to share, there’s someone there to respond, react, hop on a call with me, give advise… It’s amazing. We have fun speed-networking events, flow work sessions, discussions related to every industry you can think of… and what does this leave you with? An incredible amount Perspective. This makes for a extremely vibrant and diverse place to hang out. I am so stoked to be a part of GW. If you’re a generalist, this is it. We’re the community for you. Welcome! 🙌

I believe there are at least three powerful things about GW that make it a unique community to be a part of: Firstly, it has the ability to offer a therapeutic effect to those who may have been labelled as "problematic" by society, by providing an alternative story and a safe space to develop it. Secondly, being a part of GW means that you are among like-minded individuals who have shared experiences and are working together to find solutions. This sense of solidarity is heartwarming. Lastly, the practical support provided by Milly and other members of the community goes beyond the kind words of encouragement but extends to resources, connections, and tools that can truly make a difference in someone's life. Personally, I was drawn to GW after reading Milly's post about generalists and having that "aha" moment of realising that there are others out there who share my experiences. Being a part of this community of square pegs, explorers, polymaths, or just extraordinary people, is a gift. Thank you, Milly, for breaking the rules and creating something truly special.

I joined Generalist World because of Milly's enthusiasm for changing the narrative around being a Generalist - a cause I wanted to experience. But I stayed because of the community itself. I joined Generalist World about 6 months ago and it has been really beneficial. The really active Slack channel and great Zoom calls have been great resources in helping me craft my personal pitch as a generalist, but more importantly, in better understanding how my generalist nature is an asset. The community that is being built here is incredible.

This is an interim message to display my support and gratitude for Milly and the GW community. Interim, because I'm on a journey started by the discovery of this incredible group of swiss army knives. I have no idea where it's taking me, but it's already turned my view of the world, my career and my identity upside down in the best way. The support, knowledge and empathy shared in the community is something that everyone deserves in life but - for the 'square pegs' - the hardest to find. I was pretty lost. I'm not found yet, but I've made more progress in the last few months than the last 20 years. Milly did that.

I joined the GW community at a tumultuous period of my career. Moving to a new country as a generalist amidst large scale layoffs, I felt out of place and stressed about building a network from scratch despite 5+ years of work ex and a strong network of like minded professionals in my home country. GW provided support, not just in terms of potential opportunities but a rich community from across geographies, always ready to advise and lend a sympathetic ear. Being part of an active community at GW helped me keep myself sane through a difficult time. I can only hope to pay this support forward to other members. To say I was inspired after joining Generalist World would be an absolute understatement. Watching Milly build Generalist World from the ground up for the last few months, being completely transparent and sharing her blueprint and process, combined with her intentional community design has been incredible. A place where all generalists feel welcome.
Mar 15, 2023
I followed then connected with Milly on LinkedIn, and was really impressed with what she was sharing and more so, the community she was building. I took the plunge and signed up, recognising how much I was resonating (always considered myself a generalist) and wanted to be connected to and with like-minded people. The community is incredible, and has a wide database of knowledge, insight and sharing that is hard to find anywhere else. The help section threads are a goldmine of value, and when taking part really feel like a bonus chapter and case study in 'Range', where generalists with a diverse background are all contributing and helping someone out. The welcoming nature, the depth and breadth of talent (and diversity across so many aspects) really is unbeatable, and the value you get for your annual fee is gained within weeks if you contribute and engage. Milly has built something truly special, and in doing so has connected so many people who probably felt they were on their own otherwise.

Video transcript: Hello. My name's Adam. I think I can be very privileged to say this I am one of the founding members of of G. Right? I joined back sort of early twenty twenty two. A live pure serendipity but bought millie and myself to together around a sort of conversation about generalist and how important they were to sort of businesses and and and helping company succeed. But I suppose and off the back of that, She obviously was telling me about the the community that she was building, I think. And one of the key things if any community is to be able to bring people together to offer support health guidance, you know, there's that sort of saying it takes a village to raise a child and that, you know, I think it's... You know, the same is is true for any sort of other businesses. And I think you need help from people within communities and and in G, you see that on a daily basis. You you can post a message up and within a matter of minutes, someone who's responded and is helping. Know, various science growth roadblocks in my work and things I've been doing have reached out to the G community and and someone has been able to provide support and guidance it's a very collective, creative and and supportive community and it's it's a lot of fun to be a part of. And I think, yeah, a massive kudos officer to bringing together these people who may be have felt like they don't know fit. It's needed best way to explain it, but, you know, board together people who they might have more traditional roles, but know that they have more to give because they are generalist at helps. And I think that's very exciting. So Kudos thank you.

Generalist World has become the community where Generalists learn it is possible to thrive professionally without specializing by casting a wider net to develop knowledge and expertise across various interests. You connect with others who are ready to share insights and knowledge just as much as you are. This is very much an active community.

Human beings, in general, like to feel as if they 'belong'. This can take on many meanings for different individuals, but sometimes, you feel like you don't belong anywhere. Square peg / round hole. That's an unnerving feeling. Generalist World filled that gap for me, and for many others. When I first realized that I was not alone and that there were many others out there like myself who struggled with the traditional definitions of career and life choices, I felt as if I had been embraced by the largest and warmest of hugs. That is the type of community Generalist World is - we are all different in multiple ways, but we have all felt that same feeling. Everyone is willing to help each other out so that no one feels that way again - whether it's career pathing, launching a business or just feeling 'normal'...we all belong here.

Finding a group of people who share my interests has completely changed my life because I no longer feel like the "strange one out." Generalist World (GW) is one of the most compassionate, understanding, and professional communities I've ever been a part . Everyone is kind, supportive, and helpful; they are not hesitant to nudge others in the correct path when necessary. When you're a member of the GW community, you have the opportunity to establish sincere relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds and can look to them for advice and support in any area of your life. It has significantly improved my ability to communicate with others, as defining a generalist can be challenging. The greatest aspect of the community for me is that I don't have to explain myself to anyone; everyone can understand what I'm referring to in a right away. I now often log into Slack to check on the GW community, and I can't imagine going longer than a few days without doing so.
