When I first came across Milly and her idea, I was frankly, shocked. It was like finding out that I had a secret half-sister (and later whole community-family) that had been kept hidden from me my whole life. Were there REALLY other people like me out there!? (Me, 🥲 crying tears of joy). I joined because I was truly, truly lonely, and had been beating myself up for a long, long time about being non-linear. I couldn't wait to be part of GW. I've made some wonderful online and offline friendships, developed - over several years - a completely different (improved) self-view of myself: the understanding that I am not deficient as a person but actually a rockstar in systems thinking. The GW community is something that I look forward to opening every morning in Slack to see what cool things people are sharing, helping where I can, and getting cross-pollinated from other talented people 💜 🎁 🐝🐝🐝

One thing about GW you'll see as soon as you join: it's a "yes and" community. Yes, it's incredibly positive... and the people are more helpful and generous with their time and advice beyond any expectation. Yes, it's gonna celebrate your every win... and also potentially serve as the exact source of your next one, thanks to a shared job ad, a collaboration, or a connection of a connection. It's so incredibly welcoming--your eclectic self will love it.

Never been this desperate to join a community before.

That’s an understatement, honestly, for how I felt walking out.

The people, the vibes, every interaction.

Got constructive feedback from some, shared a few things with others. Met so many people I actually want to stay in touch with.

Can’t wait for the next one. Hoping to Join the community channel soon Generalist World 🌀

Thanks to Milly Tamati , Ovais Oozeer , Ece Kurtaraner , Marta Albertini Ríos , Georgia Hirth and many others with whom had great conversations.

Video transcript: I am a fairly new member of Generalist World, having been on it for about two months now, and in the last eight weeks I think I have met so many interesting people, had so many interesting conversations, felt validated, supported, heard, and I think it's just a magical space on Slack through the videos that they offer. The skill sets that people bring are so diverse. The experiences, the conversations are rich and abundant. There's never a lack of interesting things to find out about people just by virtue of them not having been in a niche and not having done the same thing for 30 years. And there's real value in that because you don't need icebreakers when you're in a room full of people that have so many interesting insights, so many fun things, and so many creative ideas to share. I'm just absolutely amazed at how much enriched and how much more joyous my life feels having interacted with some of these individuals and getting to know some of them even better. So if you are a person who has a lot of diverse interests, who thinks of themselves as containing multitudes, who've done a lot of different things and don't feel like there's a category for you, then Generalist World is the place to be.

I love the growth mindset percolating through every corner of the community, with questions, support, and knowledge sharing becoming almost like oxygen in our little tank. While I interact with maybe 10% of the content and offerings, I appreciate the variety of options to engage, find accountability buddies, receive guidance and give back.

As someone who's worked in IT for 16 years, many looking in would think my area of expertise was clear.

However, I've never found myself drawn to a particular title... Digital Transformation Consultant, Service Manager, Product Management, Platform Owner.... it continues

'I fix problems that are adjacent to technology where the fix is rarely more technology.' is what Claude has suggested my job might be.

Last year I came across Milly's community Generalist World 🌀, where others defined themselves not as job titles but around capabilities.

What started as an online quiz turned into joining a lovely, diverse and wonderful online community, and today was my 4th meeting (in a 4th country, in 4 months... this was not intentional) of meeting some of that community in person.

Hope to see you all again soon

Most professional spaces are so restrictive, GW was expansive. I found a community that was exactly what I needed to grow, a room full of accomplished professionals that intimidated me a little but were incredibly friendly. I practice in GW what I then take out into the world and it's the most energizing, inspiring, and supportive group of people. After having talked to so many people one-on-one, I also started doing this IRL, and now I just show up like this everywhere and this wouldn't have been possible if it wasn't for being able to do this unguarded inside GW.

Huge appreciation post! A few weeks ago, I went to Angela Bierman with an issue I needed help with. Angela and I connected on Generalist World 🌀 and totally got what I was trying to explain and why I couldn’t figure my next steps out. Sometimes being stuck means living with a heaviness and I couldn’t seem get unstuck or feel lighter. Angela was so fab as looking at things with a new perspective, creating a way for me to honestly reflect. And then it wasn’t so complicated. It ended up being a piece of yummy cake in fact! Now, I am back in motion with a few things and celebrating small wins straight away with cake, eating it, instead of saving it. It wasn’t more effort that would get me to where I wanted to go, it was the angles. So when you need to revise those angles, check out Angela’s Block Buster sessions and go eat your cake of choice! Thanks v much Angela! ID: Short haired woman wearing a lime loose shirt, black rimmed glasses, pale pink thumb braces, sits in a cafe and is about to eat a purple pastry cake. Behind her on the counter the works “Lets make that cake sparkle” is blurry but just about seen. The cake was an ube passionfruit cake and was delicious.

I am so glad I saw one of Milly's posts about Generalist World on LinkedIn! Refusing to put myself in a box and instead continuously expanding my skills and what I can offer to the world, I took the plunge and joined the GW community. Ever since I have been experiencing their Slack workspace as an immensely rich buzzing hub minus the corporate constraints. This is networking at its best: focused on the human side, calm, generous, sharing, where you get seen and matched to the right people and opportunities almost magically. Milly's "Welcome home" on her welcome email truly struck a cord. If you feel like all job descriptions you are reading are too narrow, GW may be a good fit for you. GW is definitely worth the investment and has a bright future in front of it in the highly uncertain world we live in.

I've been through so many career pivots and I'm not one 'thing' - very much an Operator who has worked in lots of different environments. Generalist World is one of the few places were this is both normalised and celebrated. There's always someone in there who is willing to help, lend an ear or experielmnet alongside you. Generalist World is one of the best communities I'm a part of.

I'm a big believer of the universe pointing us to things and people in moments of greatest need and that's what GW feels was for me. I joined primarily because of the vibe that Milly and Ece emanate: warm, supportive, welcoming, honest, no-bullshit; and the general philosophy that "weird and scattered is ok" and that "nothing is wrong with you if you don't fit into a box"! It inspired me to start talking about it more myself, and sharing that message in my circle of friends and clients. I don't think I've had a single conversation since I joined where I didn't mention the GW Community. There are a couple of things I deeply appreciate: 1. Encouragement to move at your own pace and find things from the buffet that work for you at this moment. No pressure, no rush, no high-intensity is what everyone needs more of. 2. The extreme level of detail with which the onboarding process has been put together. The Lounge has SUCH a wealth of resources, so thoughtfully put together that it leaves me speechless (and I drool like Homer Simpson) every time I go in there. 3. That it's a lifetime membership. Honestly - in this world of technofeudalism, it is SO refreshing to be a part of something that pulls to the opposite direction! It shows that it IS possible to operate in a different way which makes it genuinely inspiring and creates a ripple effect. When I grow up, I wanna be like Milly. ♡ Feel free to cut/paste/edit as needed!

My favorite thing about being part of the community is the people!! GW is full of kind, smart, & talented humans who readily offer up their expertise to help each other. I love this space for the creative, thought-provoking conversations and the real friendships you build along the way. Also, when so much feels up in the air, being part of a community where you feel supported, accepted, and seen matters more than ever… and that’s what GW has become for me. Milly, Ece, and the GW team truly deserve all the ✨ sparkles and snaps ✨ for building a one-of-a-kind online community ❤️

1. Got to talk to and meet more people interested in a variety of things like me (like business building, reading, community building, AI - the mix is deelish) 2. The energy - super warm and friendly generally
May 11, 2026
I joined GW last Summer and it's since become my favourite community to be part of. After years of building a specialist career in financial services, I had come to the realisation that my skills, experience and interest were much broader - I happened to find GW right at that inflection point, and joining the community allowed me to embrace my generalism with excitement and pride. It also fed my curiosity - the simple fact of learning about other people's journeys (in career and life) and being able to share stories, bounce around ideas and learn new things has been invaluable. For example, I know for a fact that my learning curve on AI has been much steeper than what it would have been had I not been part of GW - because of the wealth of experience on the topic within the community. Not only that - I recently went into building a business solo, after years of being in large corporate environments, and GW has enabled me to build new relationships and feel I have a 'tribe', which is such an important factor in sustaining myself at this stage. Lastly, I really appreciate the ethos and culture centred around helping and supporting each other.

Generalist World has been instrumental in introducing a feeling of possibility into my working life. I wasn’t sure I fit in at first, because I’m not a “generalist” per se - I have spent my entire career at the same multinational company - but it has been invaluable to be in community with people who believe that you can just DO things, something that had been drummed out of me over the years. This re-introduction to “the art of the possible” has changed the way I think about not just my working life, but my life in general. Thank you, GW!

I'm a relatively new member, having joined back in March, but I love how supportive and unapologetically genuine and *real* people are. There's almost an unspoken understanding that you don't need to mask who you are, and that you don't need to pretend to be someone that you're not. I'm hopeful that GW will open up more opportunities for me in the future. I've gotten a lot out of being part of GW thus far.

On a random scroll on Tiktok my life changed. Some time ago, while doom scrolling, I came upon a lady talking about different ways to see your career and how we don’t need all of us to follow the same straight line. That was Milly, and since then my life has changed. For me, this is not just a professional community. Is where problems are being solved and dreams are being encouraged. Since I joined the community, I have been in a learning journey. Part of it through the unboxing, part of it through everyone else.

I'd describe GW as: cosy, inspiring, catalysing. I've met so many inspiring, interesting, and amazing people from different corners of the world and it has given me the permission to think bigger, and step out of my comfort zone to try new things. I have been trying to fit myself into boxes and roles, but it never really felt right. So to find so many like-minded people navigating similar journeys of making their own squiggly career path has been invigorating! At the same time, it is cosy because there isn't a pressure to be "on" all the time. GW's small but mighty team are great role models in creating this culture, respecting each of our individual seasons of ebb and flow.

I joined Generalist World because of the infectious spirit of possibility, care and optimism that I saw in the public-facing side of the community - I was at a stage where I was going fractional, buying into a business and working across teams - and I was looking for a place, a common thread of community in my working life to call home - to ground me and to be able to share the parts of myself openly and to learn from. I wanted to find people who shared some similar ‘theories of work and change’ as I did - that you can always start over, build something, learn something, try something…. And a year in, I have to saw that I have found more than I hoped for. Consistent real connection and collaboration - a positive optimism and a figuring-it-out together spirit. GW has become that place for me - it’s truly special and deeply, deeply human.

I'm sorry but the world no longer belongs to specialists…

The new world belongs to the people who can see connections others can’t, and problem-solve in a whole new level.

Ever since joining Generalist World 🌀 I’ve met so many multi‑talented, overqualified people who simply don’t fit in a box (either because they can’t shrink themselves to fit one, or because the thought of doing just one thing sounds like slow death by boredom 🫠). In other words, my people 🥹

The pattern I see among great generalists is not that they know “a bit of everything”.

🌀 It’s that they can do multiple things well.

And, more importantly, they connect all these things in ways that create solutions no siloed expert could have imagined.

In the age of AI, where deep specialism is increasingly automated or accessible, what remains uniquely human is the ability to synthesize, translate, and create context across disciplines.

❗️It's not that experts are not valuable anymore, but it's that their value is shifting from the depth of their specialism to how they apply it across disciplines to solve problems in new, multidimensional ways.

So… this is why I think the world no longer belongs to those who focus on one thing, but to those who can connect multiple things in ways it hasn't been done before.

💭 Are you a generalist or a specialist?
How do you see that shaping your value in the next few years?

Two weeks ago, I co-hosted LA’s Generalist World 🌀 gathering at Unbound Brews ☕

The energy at the event was inspiring ✨ As expected, careers spanned a wide range of industries and professions - but it was a deep curiosity that emerged as the common thread. A willingness to keep asking questions, keep learning, and keep moving across boundaries.

That’s what makes generalists powerful! Not just what they know, but how they stay open by connecting, adapting, and creating in places where others stop.

Huge thanks to my co-hosts Mary Tan, Najva Sol & Ryan Powell, and Jon Muth at Unbound for the space and coffee tour.

Already plotting the sequel 🌀☕

I attended an event that was sponsored by Lovable and Canva. It wasn't what I expected, but it was exactly what I needed! The event was held on Generalist Day and was hosted by Generalist World 🌀.

There was a great Single Question Interview. And now we all know where to hide our treasure ;) Then there were Hot Seat sessions, with groups of 5. It was a chance to talk about a problem we had and ask for solutions.

We had a great team and the feedback was amazing! We didn't want to leave at the end of the session. I am very grateful for the help I got in solving an issue that I hadn't even really voiced! Perfect!

International Generalist Day 2025 - Mumbai 🌀

Last week, I had the chance to attend the International Generalist Day meetup in Mumbai - one of the 88 events happening across 35 countries! 🌍

What struck me most was how universal the “generalist” experience is.

Sagar's presentation especially resonated—it felt like he was narrating moments from my own life, connecting dots across different roles, skills, and experiences.
It was a reminder that being a generalist isn’t about doing everything, but about finding meaning in the way we adapt, learn, and contribute.

And then, the conversations! Meeting people from such diverse backgrounds was energizing.

One story that stayed with me was Rigved’s—whose life mission is simply to help people. He shared how he once arranged an entire relocation for an elderly lady with a pet, moving her from one corner of the country to another, handling all the logistics.

That, to me, is the power of being a generalist.
Not just problem-solving, but creating real, tangible impact in people’s lives.

Walking away from the event, I feel more connected than ever to this global community of generalists - Generalist World 🌀.

Thank you, Sagar Chandni, for being a wonderful host.

Thank you, Milly Tamati and team for putting this all together.

What happens when you bring a bunch of generalists together in the same room?
You talk about everything under the sun ☀️

Last week we gathered in Amsterdam for International Generalist Day. It was inspiring, unconventional, productive, and a lot of fun. Never forget the fun ;)

We shared our career journeys, what the future of work could look like (especially as we hold hands with AI), and brainstormed any roadblocks we were currently facing by being a generalist.

What I noticed is that even though we all love to do *a lot* of things, there were still trends in the kind of roles we sought that make us feel alive.

Here’s what stuck out to me:
➡️ Many of us work in EDUCATION or RESEARCH, environments that promote continuous learning and asking questions.
➡️ Many of us work with PEOPLE - whether that’s in a coaching or consulting role, cus no two people are the same, right?
➡️ Many of us work in or are affiliated with STARTUPS, where we thrive in fast-growing, dynamic spaces and can wear our many hats.

Huge thanks to Milly Tamati and Ece Kurtaraner for founding and cultivating this global community, as well as to our Amsterdam organisers Ramiro Oosting, Madalina Buzdugan, Arijana Radic, and Leticia Orcel Bordoni 👏

And if you’re a builder, tinkerer, problem-solver, dot-connector type… do yourself a favour and connect with Generalist World 🌀 - it's the ultimate hype squad and currently my favourite corner of LinkedIn.

Bonus: they regularly share jobs that are the perfect fit for generalists (spoiler alert - more & more companies are seeing the value in our range and are hiring for cross-functional roles 🥳 )

Our time is now 🙌

Connectors. System Thinkers. Innovators. Translators.

Most of us are generalists, accept it or not. Even if you are a CEO of a multinational company or a seasoned entrepreneur or a committed working professional.

Connectors bring people together and build bridges that spark collaboration.

System Thinkers see patterns, understand complexity, and optimize how things work.

Innovators imagine new possibilities and push boundaries through creativity.

Translators turn complexity into clarity, ensuring ideas and people stay aligned.

Last week, we came together in Mumbai to celebrate International Generalist Day 2025.

The meetup brought together generalists from across domains including entrepreneurs, professionals, creators, and builders to meet, greet, and form authentic connections.

I also had the opportunity to host a short workshop on two important topics:

How to ask for professional help without hesitation
How to share your professional or life story authentically, whether virtually or in person

We explored blindspots that often hold us back and realized how much stronger we become when we share openly and connect honestly.

Here is to building a world where generalist in you is seen, valued, celebrated, and supported.

Thank you Milly Tamati Ece Kurtaraner Generalist World 🌀for standing up for this cause and creating a global movement.

Anyone who knows me knows my specialty is simple: getting sh*t done. ✅

In the past, I've felt like a fish out of water. I’m a jack of all trades, master of some, constantly surrounded by specialists in finance, tech, business, and now genetics. (It’s hard not to feel like the odd one out when people casually drop "Best linear unbiased prediction" into a conversation.)

Then I stumbled across The Outsiders (courtesy of Katie Paterson) and Generalist World 🌀. I was excited… but also a little nervous. Was I about to walk into a room full of people exactly like me? I could not have been more wrong.

What I found was a hugely inspiring group of people who bring breadth to their work in completely different ways. The diversity in skills, styles, and stories was incredible. It turns out being versatile doesn’t look one way, it looks like a thousand ways. Which is painfully obvious when you think about it!

Last week we had the first Generalist World 🌀 Meetup in Montevideo.

In a country of 3.4 million people (and about 3x more cows) gathering five people around the same table actually feels like pretty good odds.

We talked about traveling for work, getting out of our comfort zones, and, like most meetups, we learned that taking a decent group photo is harder than it sounds 📸

What made it worthwhile was the chance to connect with others who don’t fit neatly into one box. Generalists often move in different directions, but conversations like these make it clear how much overlap there really is.

Some people find recommendation algorithms a little creepy.

I actually...

enjoy them.

The other week, I left a comment on a fun post by Shana F. Brewer about Generalists. A few days later, Global Generalist Day by Generalist World 🌀 popped up in my feed. Last week, I found myself at the Bucharest get-together organized by Adina R.. Boom!

The generalist–specialist discussion resonated with me because I think my own path sits right in the middle: deep expertise in marketing, with a specialization in Paid Advertising. At the same time, my early experience running all things marketing in small businesses gave me some breadth of a generalist. That’s why today I see myself as a T-shaped specialist - grounded in marketing, with depth in paid ads, while also exploring fields like community management, training, workshop facilitation, and beyond.

Back to the meetup - we were a small group, but the atmosphere was fantastic. We swapped stories, exchanged perspectives, and celebrated what it means to be a generalist, a specialist - or somewhere in between.

👉 Where do you see yourself on this spectrum?

🎉 Last Wednesday, we celebrated International Generalist Day 🌍

An amazing initiative by Generalist World 🌀that reminds us of the true value of those who don’t fit into just one box.
The Valencia event was beautifully hosted by Andreina Gómez Torres, who funnily enough, was also the first person to introduce me to the word “generalist” over a year ago.
And when she said it…something clicked on my mind instantly! 😍

Up until that point, both of us had sometimes questioned our potential.

Why?

Because our paths weren’t “linear” or “specialized” like most people’s.
While many professionals choose to focus on one field, one industry, or one area of expertise…
I’ve always taken a different route.

I’m the kind of person who learns fast and solves whatever needs or challenge, and my years working in China sharpened that ability like nothing else.
👉 One day I was buying a full production line of machinery,
👉 The next, sourcing fabrics in a local market,
👉 Then, organizing a fashion photoshoot so international brands could select the pieces they wanted to order.
👉 And later that same day, joining a dinner with visiting clients or suppliers.

For a long time, I thought of that versatility as just part of who I was. 😆
But over time, I’ve come to truly appreciate how valuable it is to be able to adapt, quickly understand new contexts, and move projects forward, no matter the scale.

It’s a mindset shaped by experience and driven by curiosity.
One that helps you navigate ambiguity, connect dots across industries, and make things happen when it matters most. 💡

Honestly? It’s a treasure. ✨

And that treasure is exactly what defines being a generalist! Not someone tied to one path, but someone able to move across many. Someone with range, resilience, and the ability to bring value and solutions where others might see complexity. 👀

That same mindset is what now allows me to support international companies as they navigate diverse and ever-evolving challenges in Spain.

What about you?

Do you consider yourself more of a #generalist or a specialist?

And how has that shaped your journey? 🍃

Here’s to all of us out there who thrive on variety and a little chaos!

🌍✨ We celebrated "International Generalist Day" with the Generalist World 🌀 community hosted by Dave Mence. It was a room full of curious, passionate folks.

One of the things I love most about being a Generalist is the journey of discovery: following curiosities, connecting ideas, spotting patterns, and building bridges between people. It allows me to see the bigger picture and relate to a wide range of perspectives.

There’s a misconception that often frustrates me: "Generalists are aimless". We’re definitely not. In academia, interdisciplinary thinking is praised yet in the workplace, we’re often asked to specialize. And if specialization is your strength, that’s great and we need you! But let’s not dismiss Generalists either. Generalists are nimble, scrappy, and willing to learn and try new things. That adaptability is exactly what makes us so impactful.

A special shoutout to Dave for hosting the event! He spoke with such passion about how Generalist World has bolstered his confidence and accelerated his growth, both professionally and personally.

Here’s to celebrating the curious, the connectors, and the do-it-all builders shaping what it means to be a Generalist. 💙

Generalists, you are unstoppable. ⚡

Our IGD meetup proved exactly why this community is a force to be reckoned with.

We talked about how generalism is often misunderstood as a weakness when in reality, it’s a superpower. Generalists are the ones who jump in, take on new challenges, thrive under uncertainty, and enjoy working across domains. They’re the foundation of every early startup team.

As organizations grow, specialists step in with deep expertise. But when it comes to driving innovation and shaping the future, it’s the T-shaped leaders, specialists who also think like generalists, who truly move things forward by connecting the dots across functions.

We also shared our “squiggly” career journeys and found common ground in the traits that make us who we are: curiosity, learning on the go, adaptability, and being hands-on in every role we take up.

And the best part? We’re just getting started. Together, we talked about how to spread this awareness, discover more generalists, and grow this movement here in Pakistan.

Grateful to everyone who joined the conversation and brought their energy. Huge thanks to Milly Tamati and the Generalist World 🌀community for sparking this global wave.

Here’s to building, connecting, and celebrating the unstoppable power of generalists!

👉 We’re also building a community of generalists here. If you’re one, what kind of generalist are you? Take the quiz and share in the comments: lnkd.in/dJSbiwD2

Dubai’s first International Generalist Day 🌀

Picture this: a table full of strangers in Dubai, talking about everything from PR to design to tech to food to the odd side projects we all secretly obsess over. Stories crisscrossing, ideas spilling over, laughter breaking the ice. It was messy, curious, energising, an eclectic mix of stories and thoughts and ideas and it was magic.

That was September 3rd, when Khusshboo Mehta and I hosted Dubai’s very first International Generalist Day gathering. More than 20 people showed up, and suddenly our little space felt like a bridge between worlds that don’t usually meet.

No stiff networking questions. No rehearsed elevator pitches. Just real conversations and that spark when someone says, “Oh, I’ve felt that too.”

I left buzzing. Not because we solved anything, but because it reminded me of something I tend to forget: being “all over the place” is not a flaw. That too-much-ness - the curiosity, the many hats, the love for wandering across disciplines is actually the good stuff. It’s what makes us #generalists.

So here’s to building more of these tables in Dubai, and to the people who make them possible. Thank you to everyone who came, and to Ece Kurtaraner & Milly Tamati for sparking the Generalist World 🌀.

Community creates connection, and connection creates value and that’s exactly what #InternationalGeneralistDay was all about. 🌀

With 80+ events in 30+ countries, generalists around the world came together to celebrate our squiggly paths. In London, I was lucky enough to support two incredible meetups with Generalist World 🌀

🥐 Event 1: Canva Breakfast
Milly was there (I was low-key fangirling) and we got to see Mildred in action, blending silliness with seriousness in a way that brought everyone out of their shell and show up authentically. Along with Romona, supporting as well.

🍜 Event 2: Ramen Club
My first time facilitating a public event, and I couldn’t have asked for a better co-host than Marta. Despite classic English weather, 12 generalists turned up, the perfect number for small group chats.

Our theme was getting to know each other beyond your elevator pitch. We skipped the “So, what do you do?” and kicked off with Human Bingo. Then came Curiosity Marketplace, a space to share offers, asks, and unexpected insights.

🗣️ People didn’t want to stop talking. It felt like a space where everyone’s unique path had room to be seen, heard, and celebrated.

🎁 And when hometime came, everyone got their very own instant ramen pot.

🤩 Thanks Ece, Milly, and Sarah for making it happen and everyone who came.

We missed you, Charlie, but Solomon was a great stand-in.

Here’s to more meetups, more magic, and more moments like this.

✨ You know you're having a good time when you lose track of it 🌀

Yesterday, for International Generalist Day, I hosted a picnic that turned out to be beautifully serendipitous — this time, it was all women.

Time flew by as our conversations about each of our journeys unfolded, and here are some common threads I noticed:
🌀 Squiggly paths are not rare — they’re the norm across cultures
🌀A lot of people with the lifelong learning and curiosity mindset end up being generalist!
🌀 Many of us share the same challenges: balancing too many passions at once, navigating the fog of what’s next, finding language to describe our nonlinear journeys, and searching for opportunities that truly fit.

And yet, there’s so much strength in these winding paths. Being a generalist is not about lacking focus — it’s about weaving connections, seeing possibilities others can’t, and holding courage in uncertainty.

S/o to Brechtje, Abra, Federica, Cecilia, Leslie, Kalima, Stella, Teresa, Baillie, Laura, Mizgin & Kasia for bringing your beautiful energy and snacks to the meetup!

Thanks Milly, Ece and Sarah for making this happen!! Generalist World 🌀 ✨

If you’re building spaces for learning, collaboration, or community and want someone who can bring cohesion to diverse threads as a manager or hold space as a host, I’d love to connect. Let’s create environments where nonlinear journeys are not just welcomed — they’re celebrated.

✨ Generalists thrive when they connect, and Generalists in Yerevan proved it.

On September 3rd, 40 Generalists and Specialists gathered at AI9 Startup Campus to celebrate the first-ever #InternationalGeneralistDay in #Yerevan.

It was an evening full of inspiring ideas and interesting questions that sparked real connections and meaningful conversations. 🌀

We were not just united in that room by the same idea, but also connected with hundreds of Generalists from all over the world. Similar meetups happened all over the world across 34+ countries and 88+ cities. 🌐

The conversations were so interesting and engaging that we stayed an hour longer than it was planned
- What makes someone a Generalist in today’s world
- Being a Specialist vs. Generalist vs. Specialist-Generalist
- How AI is shifting the demand for problem-solvers who can operate across domains
- And the personal journeys that led us to embrace our “squiggly careers”

A HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who made this possible:

Milly Tamati and Ece Kurtaraner, Sarah Agopian-Khalifé — for organizing International Generalist Day and turning it into a global movement 🌎

Arik Akhverdyan, Roza K., and the entire AI9 Startup Campus team — for opening their doors and creating a friendly and warm environment for this meetup. 🏰

Julieta Simonyan — for co-hosting with me and helping organize the event so smoothly. 🦸‍♀️

Ramiro Oosting — for providing thoughtful feedback on my presentation and coming up with the 4 stages of the generalist journey that sparked more discussion 4️⃣

Davit Hovhannisyan — for capturing the event and creating memories with great photos. 📸

📚 If, for some reason, you missed the meetup and are interested to learn more about Generalists, you can also find the resources we shared during the event here: lnkd.in/d9pk3kcg

This was more than just a meetup — it was proof that Generalists thrive when they connect, share, and learn from each other. 🌍

The biggest insight I walked away with is that organizations miss out on enormous potential when they don’t fully embrace Generalists in their operations and leadership. The skills to connect dots, manage across domains, and innovate in the gaps are too valuable to ignore. My hope is that this kind of meetup becomes a catalyst for change—helping Generalists find their place where they’re needed most.

Thank you to everyone who joined and supported — your energy and presence made this gathering truly special, and together we proved that Generalists can shape the future by connecting, learning, and creating side by side.

What an unforgettable day. 🌀

On International Generalist Day, I had the privilege of co-hosting the Karachi meetup alongside the amazing Hamza Ali🔥🚀 and Zeeshan Ahmed. Out of 90+ locations across 35 countries, ours was the only one in Pakistan, and I couldn’t be prouder to have celebrated it here.

What struck me most wasn’t the size of the group or the agenda, it was the feeling of meeting people who truly “get it.” Generalists often walk squiggly career paths that don’t fit neatly into one box, and yet in this room, every story felt familiar, every experience resonated.

We laughed, shared our journeys, and found comfort in knowing we’re part of something bigger, a global movement that’s reimagining what careers can look like when curiosity and versatility take the lead.

Grateful for the chance to connect, reflect, and celebrate with such a vibrant community. Here’s to embracing our squiggly paths together.

My spirit animal? A deep diver squirrel! 🤿 🐿️

That's what I discovered during International Generalist Day 🌀 in Frankfurt. Seven of us gathered in a cozy café. Complete strangers from various industries, continents, and languages. All summoned by the Generalist World 🌀 call.

We kicked things off with "What's your generalist story?" and, honestly, I wasn't expecting this ice breaker to be so effective. The connections were instant. People's faces lit up hearing their own experiences reflected back.
One person said (I think this was from a book they read):
"Curious people collect bits of knowledge like squirrels collect nuts" 🌰 🐿️
(Do you mean frantically?? Because that's how I do it! 😅 )

Other analogies popped up: scanners with wide-reaching arms, but also serial deep divers who jump from one obsession to the next. At the heart of it? A deep, deep sense of curiosity.

But being a generalist also comes with struggles. Sometimes people don't see the value that we bring, sometimes we don't know how to frame it when applying for jobs. We connect dots, see patterns others miss, translate between worlds, and shape holistic solutions.

There's something powerful about curious minds finding each other. Check the big smiles in the photo if you don't believe me. I am beyond happy for having hosted this event, and also proud for putting myself out there for the unexpected.

Thank you so much to everyone that joined! 🤗 I hope we cross paths again soon 😊

And thanks to Milly Tamati, Ece Kurtaraner, and the whole group of IGD hosts. It was great to be each other's cheerleaders for this 🎊

Big week, but absolutely worth it! 🎉 Had two incredible events in the VEED Office this week from two great communities in the London Tech space. Started with the International Generalist Day meetup with Milly Tamati from Generalist World 🌀 on Wednesday! Never have I hosted an event that just felt like friends hanging out. For those who don’t know, “generalist" is a term used for those who don’t fit into the classic career box. A problem-solver who’s not tied to one specialty — they adapt to whatever’s needed. I didn’t even know it, but now I would consider myself a generalist! Thanks to everyone who came out, especially battling the monsoon to get here! 🫠

It was a casual meetup at one of my favorite Seattle breweries, where we had great conversations around career transitions, how AI is impacting the workforce, and the advantage of being a generalist in our work.

It's not very often that I've found professional spaces, communities or networks where I felt like I fitted quite right. I've usually felt stronger connections to individuals who I've found along the way who are also a bit like me, operating between disciplines, on the edges of things, doing the 'career thing' in a non-traditional way - one that's a bit hard to explain. So it's usually a sense of feeling like the odd one out - the minority.

On Wednesday I went to an #InternationalGeneralistDay #IGD meet up in Edinburgh as part of my new-ish journey to understand what it means to be a Generalist (aka 𝗇̶𝗈̶𝗍̶ ̶𝖺̶ ̶𝗌̶𝗉̶𝖾̶𝖼̶𝗂̶𝖺̶𝗅̶𝗂̶𝗌̶𝗍̶). I didn't know anyone else there, and didn't really know what to expect but conversation was so easy and there were so many things we had in common.

It was so weird to hear private thoughts and experiences I've had throughout my education and working life said almost word for word back to me through the mouths of strangers. In this room my perspective and experience was reflected by the majority.

I've collated some of the things I heard in the room, combined with my own words in the image below incase anyone else resonates and just needed the right words to explain it. Thanks to Agnese Sardella & Kelly Ling for organising, and Generalist World 🌀& Milly Tamati for creating this community.

Turns out being “all over the place” is exactly the point. Recife proved it. 🌀🇧🇷

Imagine a table where every conversation jumps from one world to another… careers, passions, ideas, all tangled up in the best way. That was us. No networking awkwardness, no “so, what do you do?”, just pure curiosity and “wow, me too!” vibes.

Honestly, it felt like permission to be exactly who we are: multi-hyphenated and endlessly curious.

I hosted International Generalist Day here and my brain is still buzzing. Hosting reminded me that our “too much-ness” isn’t too much at all, it’s the good stuff.

Wednesday we celebrated #internationalgeneralistday around the world, including here in Los Angeles. Because my co-hosts Mary Tan, Sofia DeMay and Najva Sol are such rockstars the LA x Part & Parcel IGD event went on without me and a happy group of generalists got to connect. Happy #InternationalGeneralistDay!

I'm so excited that I was able to host this wonderful popup in my city!

The very first Tulsa International Generalist Day is officially in the books, and what a great event it was.

There’s something powerful about being in a room full of people who get it.
People who understand what it means to wear many hats, explore big ideas, and carve paths that don’t always fit neatly in one box.

We all walked in as strangers…
But by the end of the night, we were swapping stories, sharing ambitious projects, comparing hometowns, and most importantly *seeing* each other.

That sense of being *seen* as a generalist is rare and special.

This meetup was just the beginning. I’m excited to see where these conversations and connections take us next.

To every generalist out there: your curiosity is a strength, not a flaw. Keep showing up!

Global community building at its finest - joining in from The Hague to celebrate International Generalist Day✨

Instead of struggling to answer "so what do you do?" with one word or phrase, this was a day to share and embrace all the hats we're wearing, professionally and personally.

Surrounded by people who also love to do many things in life, it was truly a joy to meet people whose paths don't fit neat, linear boxes either.

That's community building to me: facilitating the 'finally, my people' moments ✨

Thanks Ilkay, Sunayana, Fleur, Chris, Lena, Joachim, Nathan and Laura for joining the meetup as part of the Generalist World 🌀 celebration!

International Generalist Day was so much fun yesterday. Thank you Generalist World 🌀 for creating a holiday to celebrate the best kind of people 😉! In the Boston area, I held a co-working & happy hour meetup and boy did folks show up and show out.

🚘 People came from Maine & Rhode Island!
📈 Heard from at least 3 founders about their startups
🙋‍♀️ Connected with other Generalists who all similarly felt so seen by this community!
🧠 Swapped ideas and resources
📚 Heard about an impending book launch
📰 Signed up for the launch of a new community & substack
💻 And got some work done too

Thank you to everyone who came! Patrick Therriault, Leah H. Keller, MPH, Rebecca Anders, Lauren Rugani, Margie Bell, Claudia M. Grasso, MBA, PMP, Sam P., Lekha Puri, Linda Alexander, Julie M. Murray, Sid Desai

People with broad skillsets can more easily pivot, adapt, and transfer knowledge and they're less vulnerable to #automation because they reinvent themselves.

#Innovation emerges at the nexus of different fields. Spotting these intersections positions creative generalists more likely to be inventors and innovators.

Companies increasingly need people who can translate between teams and departments, support #changemanagement, understand multiple perspectives, and synthesize information from diverse sources.

If you ordinarily connect the dots across multiple disciplines, you might be a generalist.

If you're the person they always ask to figure it out, you might be a generalist.

Your era has come. The world needs your curiosity and capabilities more than ever.

Chicago celebrates generalists everyday and especially on International Generalist Day! If you missed us today, we'll be back on November 19 - registration link in the comments.

Being a generalist isn’t a job title. It’s a mindset.

And yesterday, people all over the world came together to celebrate exactly that.

Last year, someone in our community said:
"Why don’t we just organize a day for generalists?"

Fast-forward → 25+ cities joined in 2024.

This year? 88+ cities across 35+ countries.

From Australia to Armenia, South Africa to Singapore, Mexico to the Netherlands and everywhere in between.

What makes IGD special is that every event looked different:
- A walk in the park here
- A picnic there
- Slide decks in some places, board games in others

(looking at you Vera Lakmaker and Albert Chobanyan 😜 )

But the heart of it all was the same: connect curious minds, celebrate bridge-builders, and gather the people who love to “just do things.”

Yesterday in Amsterdam, we had a blast celebrating with our crew (huge thanks to the team + venue Buurman & Buurman De With🍕).

So here’s to the fixers, the dot-connectors, and the bridge-builders everywhere.

Thanks Ece Kurtaraner Milly Tamati Sarah Agopian-Khalifé for making it happen.

And tnx to dream team Madalina Buzdugan Arijana Radic and Leticia Orcel Bordoni for making it happen here 💫

Loved seeing some familair faces like Mark Wormgoor and Lennart Verhoeven and equally loved hearing all the story's from new faces like Miguel Mira and Naviin Prabhu.

International Generalist Day 2025 → done.

And we’re only getting started. 🌀

Happy International Generalist Day everyone! 🎉

Today, there were IRL community events held in 88 cities around the globe (!!!) commemorating this new world we’re now living in - one in which the nature of being a ‘generalist’ is sought after and even celebrated.

What has historically been a bug is now starting to be considered a valued feature! And businesses of all shapes and sizes are beginning to understand that value, thanks to the help of the Generalist World 🌀 community that’s championing this global movement almost all on their own.

When I was asked if I’d host the Toronto ‘IGD’ event, I was immediately 100% IN! And what a wonderful event it turned out to be 👏

So many deeply fascinating, multi-passionate generalist people all together in one room - insanely good vibes, and a wild variety of interesting conversations. Doesn’t get any better than this.

Thanks to everyone who attended, and thanks to GW for having the boldness to dream up this day that has become a global phenomenon. Clearly you're onto something big that resonates with a ton of people.

The first Philadelphia #InternationalGeneralistDay was a success! We had a lovely gathering of interesting, curious people with squiggly careers.

We spent the first half connecting as people over shared interests--no titles, industries, or companies required.

Then we compared our squiggly careers and, unsurprisingly, had a lot in common. Many notes were taken, many laughs were shared, and new connections were made.

My new favorite ritual is trying to fit all the lovely group photos from #InternationalGeneralistDay meetups into collages. I managed to squeeze in about half of them - almost impossible to fit all 88 meetups that happened across 34 countries yesterday.

It's like post-Christmas morning opening gifts - except I never celebrated Christmas lol, I'm Turkish - so maybe birthday morning opening presents?

But also it lasts 24+ hours because photos and celebrations started dropping into our IGD hosts group the night before till next day 4AM. From Australia to Singapore to Thailand to India to Armenia to Europe to South Africa and UK and then to US and Mexico and Paraguay... the list keeps going 🌍

What can I say - this is a peak community power moment for me.

97+ volunteer hosts supported each other to make this happen. 🫶 I don't have enough words in my vocab to express my gratitude. These people carved out time from their busy lives, found venues, welcomed strangers, created magic in their cities.

And big shout to Sarah Agopian-Khalifé for having my back and keeping everything organized - helped me not lose my calm when I was drowning in spreadsheets and WhatsApp notifications 😅

Watching generalists find their people in real life, in person, around the world... on the same day... just because Milly and I made this day up last year?

Everything is made up. Connections are real.
Community is bigger than the sum of its parts. 🌀

(3 locals + 1 nomad) x Mocktails x Curiosity = Generalist Magic ✨
🌀Last night, four incredible minds gathered in Denver for an intimate conversation that reminded me why Generalists are the unsung heroes of the modern world. 🎉 Alyssa Clark Reese Quinn Elias Abraham Parker

We dove deep into the art and science of being the connective tissue in organizations  — those who shoulder the emotional labor of bridging visionaries with reality, translating ambitious dreams into actionable processes, and holding space for both breakthrough moments and necessary pivots. Another top-of-mind topic that particularly resonated: how we're evolving our relationship with AI from treating agents as digital interns to cultivating them as genuine thought partners 🦾
The underlying thread of our chat revolved around belonging. True belonging isn't about fitting in or checking boxes — it's about being truly seen and heard with all our intersecting identities, our beautiful complexity, and yes, our imperfections. When we show up authentically, we give others permission to do the same 🌈
We also explored something rarely discussed in professional circles: how to weave the wisdom from our mistakes into new relationships and opportunities. Embracing potential failures isn't pessimism — it's courage 🦸🏼‍♀️

To my fellow generalists: your ability to see patterns across disciplines, to translate between worlds, and to hold multiple truths simultaneously isn't just valuable — it's essential. Keep connecting the dots that others can't see. 🎉

If you’re a proud Generalist and can’t wait till the next meetup – show me your Bingo Card!

Had such a great time at the Ottawa Generalist Day meet-up yesterday! It’s not every day you get to be in a room where pivots and winding paths aren’t just accepted, they’re celebrated.

💛 Big thanks to Julie Lavergne for hosting such a welcoming and energizing space. Shoutout to the team at Generalist World 🌀for coordinating this global celebration. Proof that detours really do make the best stories!

🌀 🌍 Our first #InternationalGeneralistDay meetup in Portland OR!

Special thank you to Kristin Hansbrook (Hansen) for co-hosting with me last night and working so hard to make this a success. It's been a special pleasure to collaborate and I hope it's just the beginning!

We had a wonderful conversation over the course of several hours about what it means to have a squiggly career. 🔥 Some folks were just beginning the journey of what it means to describe ourselves as generalists and there was spirited discussion about what kind of future we can make when we see ourselves this way.

My sincerest hoped-for outcome was people leaving with each other's business cards in their pockets and plans to meet again, and so it was! I'm so excited to hang out with each and every one of these delightful new friends in the coming days and weeks!

Thank you Ece and Milly for making this possible, Hawthorne Asylum for hosting 🌯 and everyone for attending. Generalists Unite!

Last month, I joined a global movement...

Milly founder of Generalist World 🌀 called for volunteer hosts to organise International Generalist Day celebrations in their cities.

I responded 🙋🏻‍♀️

Because I wanted to celebrate my squiggly journey.

It’s led me to where I am today and who I’ve become

With the capabilities across brand, marketing, partnerships, events, finance etc…
the list goes on…

I wanted to celebrate it 🥳

And, I wanted to celebrate with others who’ve had squiggly journeys.

By putting my hand up, it led me to Agnese.

In less than 4 weeks, we organised an event together.

We’ve never met each other before, we’ve never worked together before.

We chatted on whatsapp and decided to go for it.

I reached out to Sarah Thomson at Chaophraya, she said yes.

Agnese flexed her behind the scenes event skills.

In just over a week, our event went live…

We planned for 15 attendees, we had over 30 registrations in less than 3 days.

Last night, that special group of people, with the biggest hearts, widest variety of skills and experiences came together.

A lot of us met for the first time.

We shared our experiences, our superpowers, our wins.

We celebrated!

There was a lot of warmth and joy in the room.

I reunited with old friends and made new ones.

My heart is full.

I’m excited for the group to come together again.

At the end of the evening, most of us shared how wonderful it was to reflect on our past experiences and learnings.

To realise how our past has compounded and led us all here today.

Importantly, it is OK to not just be ONE thing.

And not to fit in a neat box.

That we can be a sum of many things and that’s what makes us all unique.

So, go on… I challenge you.

Celebrate your squiggly experiences and journey.

Celebrate your uniqueness and celebrate being YOU.

Thank you all you amazing generalists who came out on such a wet evening.

Katie Paterson Dana Drzikova Sallie Bale Sarah Chalmers Page Catia V. Marie-Amélie Viatte Gemma Armit Cameron Abel Lynsey Abbott Nicola Kenny Steven Smith Anaïs Guillemaud Chloe Spiby Loh

and many others who ive not mentioned.

I left our first IGD meetup feeling energized, connected, and understood.
Being surrounded by people who love to try new things, learn from mistakes, and build cool stuff reminded me of how powerful it is to find your tribe. The sense of belonging can recharge your batteries and give new meaning to the challenges ahead.
✨ Huge thanks to the Generalist World 🌀team — Ece Kurtaraner, Milly Tamati, and everyone behind the scenes — for sparking this global celebration.

Sure, the day is made up, but certainly the connections are real. That more than half the attendees in Sydney were repeat visitors, and I know there are catchups spurred by these Generalist World 🌀events is testament to those connections made!

Meanwhile, after a short break, I'll get onto organising the next Generalist World Sydney event.

What an incredible evening celebrating generalists and squiggly, non-linear career experiences here in Perth! 🌍🌀

A big thank you to everyone who showed up, brought such positive energy and shared their stories at our inaugural Perth International Generalist Day event for Generalist World 🌀.

Someone mentioned to me towards the end of the night that they weren't really sure what to expect when arriving but were pleasantly surprised after finding themselves immersed in deep conversations across a bunch of wild and diverse topics - exactly what being a generalist is all about!

There's something magical about being in a room full of people who just 'get it'. It's often difficult for generalists feeling the pressure to specialise when every bone in their body knows it doesn't feel quite right for them. Sometimes the box is just too small to contain all our amazing interconnected skillsets.

Being part of a global celebration spanning 80+ locations worldwide this year felt surreal, all simultaneously coming together to make meaningful connections and embrace our range.

Looking forward to hosting more events here in Perth in the near future. If you're interested in attending our next generalist meet-up, get in touch!

What an absolutely brilliant night celebrating International Generalist Day here in #Perth! 🌍✨

Still buzzing from connecting with such an incredible, diverse group of humans who just get it. From tech-creative hybrids to strategy-turned-operations folks and engineer-innovation founders, we had career stories that zigzagged in the most beautiful ways.

The best part? Despite doing completely different things, everyone's journey felt so relatable – those moments of "Wait, you've felt that too?!"

The conversations flowed effortlessly across topics (classic generalist style!) and I loved watching new connections spark throughout the room. Several people mentioned they'd never heard of Generalist World before but left feeling like they'd found their tribe – honestly, that's the magic right there. Where your diverse skill stack is celebrated, not questioned. Where "I wear many hats" is met with understanding nods instead of confused looks.

Being part of a global celebration across 80+ locations worldwide made it even more special – knowing generalists everywhere were simultaneously embracing their range and making meaningful connections.

Huge thanks to everyone who showed up with such positive energy and openness. You made our inaugural Perth event unforgettable!

Already looking forward to planning the next one with Liam Tan... watch this space! 🌀 🎉

I'm still buzzing with energy after yesterday - as Milly put it, I'm definitely feeling that "IGD hangover" today!

Yesterday was International Generalist Day and we celebrated it with an event in London, hosted at the beautiful Canva office.

I know, I know - it might look like I’m recycling photos and inventing events because I was just here a few weeks ago… but I promise I’m not. I’m just a little obsessed with this community and will take any chance I can to spend more time around them. 🌱

A huge highlight was finally meeting Milly in real life (yes, I was fangirling).

And shoutout to Mildred - the creativity and originality she brought to the networking rounds were phenomenal. You really know how to spice up conversations and facilitate a vibe that makes people open up. 👏

Big kudos also to Ece, Emily and Sarah for the incredible work they’re doing behind the scenes. This year IGD was truly on fire 🔥 - pulling together something that feels so effortless yet so impactful is no small feat.

And then, of course, the people. I reconnected with familiar faces, met new ones, and deepened friendships that already feel like home. 💫

Huge thanks to Georgia and Ramona for cultivating such a welcoming atmosphere. Every time I leave one of these gatherings, I feel energised, inspired, and reminded that being a generalist isn’t about doing everything but connecting dots, sharing generously, and building momentum together.

What a morning it was. 🌍✨

I hosted a small and powerful networking circle here in Coimbatore for #InternationalGeneralistDay!! 🚀. 6 of us in the room - yet the depth of stories and journeys made me realize something important:

👉 Being a generalist isn’t just a career strategy. It’s not something you “pick” because it sounds good on paper.
It has to come from your core, your nature, your curiosity, and your refusal to be confined to one box.

Every person in the room reflected that truth in their own way:
Vinay – the wise man who’s worn so many hats he’s lost count; he even started a media streaming company here in Coimbatore before YouTube was founded.
Madhusudhan Muthu CSPO® – from biotech lab coats to edtech, AI, and dashboards proving reinvention is greatness in action.
Abayan C V – first to arrive, and first to show what it means to carve ground in this new age of products and ideas.
Tharun K T – building students for students, a venture where lifting each other is the foundation.
Praveen Babu – a mechanical engineer turned trader, guided by his love for those green candles 📈.

These are not “linear” stories. They are layered, multi-directional, and deeply human. And that’s the beauty of generalists, the richness comes from connecting dots most people never thought to connect.

💡 My takeaway: If you’re wired to explore, don’t fight it. Being a generalist is not a weakness to “fix”. It’s a strength to embrace. This was just the beginning.

I'm excited to continue creating spaces for these conversations and connections.

Many thanks for giving me this chance, Generalist World 🌀. Many thanks to Chocko Choza for providing us with a private space and patiently handling us throughout; your staff's support made these conversations possible. 🙏

The secret to unforgettable events is…

Creating connection.

Yesterday, for #IGD2025, I hosted the Madrid Generalist World 🌀 meetup, a sunset picnic at an iconic spot - Templo de Debod 🌅

The purpose of the meetup was simple: gathering as many generalists as possible to celebrate our sqiggly careers and that fitting into a box is not our jam. Watching the "picnicers" (is that a word?) start conversations with strangers and leave inspired reminded me of a core truth: an event isn’t unforgettable until people feel connected.

When designing your event with connection in mind, here are a few things to consider:

🧩 Spaces for interaction – Are attendees set up to meet, mingle, and collaborate naturally? Think beyond networking breaks. Try icebreakers, small-group discussions, or shared challenges that spark conversation.

🎯 Shared experiences – People connect through doing, not just talking. Build activities, challenges, or moments that everyone can participate in together. These shared experiences create bonds that last long after the event ends.

🎉 Moments of magic – Surprise connections often happen in the unplanned: a shared laugh, an unexpected collaboration, a casual chat that turns into an opportunity. Design for spontaneity as much as structure.

Yesterday's sharing of food, drink, and stories casually with no real agenda until it got dark was all we needed.

An event that fosters connection doesn’t just fill a room; it builds community, encourages collaboration, and leaves attendees feeling like they belong.

What’s the last event you attended that made you feel genuinely connected?

-
Let’s make your next event the one people leave already missing it.

I had such a great time hosting the very first International Generalists Day meetup here in Inverness! 🎉

We kept it cozy with a relaxed evening at The Walrus and Corkscrew wine bar — thank you to everyone who came along for the great chats and connection. 🍷💬 We covered everything from how we use AI in work to the best weird snacks!

It’s #InternationalGeneralistDay! Excited to connect with fellow generalists in real life later today 🎉

Someone asked me recently what path I took to get here. I struggled to answer because the truth is, I didn’t follow a path, I wandered, explored and pivoted. As a child I would dread the “what do you want to be when you grow up?” because I never had a clear answer, and honestly, I still don’t.

It took time (and a fair bit of unlearning) to realise that a squiggly path isn’t something to apologise for, it’s a superpower 🦸‍♀️

Early in my career, societal norms shaped what I thought I could or should do. Those expectations were limiting and deeply rooted in the gendered assumptions of the time. But I’ve been incredibly lucky to work alongside strong, brilliant women who helped me challenge those ideas. Each one, in their own way, showed me how to break down barriers and build something better for myself and those around me.

Thank you to the women who’ve inspired, mentored, and empowered me. I carry your lessons with me every day ❤️

While it’s impossible to name them all, a special shout out to Jane McIntyre, Natanya Anderson, Olivia Landolt, Charlotte Kennett, Patrizia Bertini, Kellie Snyder, Laurier Alder, Staci Satterwhite, Ulrika Haug, Kathrin Cwickel, Abigail Weitzenfeld, Jennifer Keirnan, Ariel Chan, Virginia Miracle, Jenny Weigle-Bonds, Skye Forrester-Sloan, Allison Fasching, Milena P., Chantelle van Niekerk ACMA, CGMA, Twanette Keyser and of course Milly Tamati & Ece Kurtaraner without whom my Generalist World 🌀journey would have never begun 💛

My late dad was the ultimate generalist: author, adventurer, pilot, product leader, provocateur, chess player, intellectual. Not easy, never dull.

I carry that thread with me (particularly the not being easy bit)! For me, being a generalist means connecting the unexpected, spotting cultural patterns in business, telling unheard and unusual stories, and always asking the questions that sometimes others miss.

Five years ago, using the word "generalist" to describe anyone was effectively an insult.

Never shying away from the opportunity to self-deprecate, I started using it to talk about my career journey almost non-stop. And then I met Milly Tamati.

Fast forward to today - International Generalist Day. There are 88 in-person meetups happening across the globe, bringing people together to talk about their squiggly paths and all the things that get them excited.

Your story matters. Tell it. Because you never know what can come from it.

Happy International Generalist Day! 🎉

This is what being a generalist looks like in my world: my dining table covered in swag from Stories Unseen, Mather Farm and The Exchange Collective (plus a few side quests I probably shouldn’t admit to). Stickers, bottles, books, totes — it’s a whole ecosystem.

As Generalist World 🌀 puts it, being a generalist is about:
🤹‍♀️ Range — moving between industries, projects, and ideas without missing a beat
🔗 Connection — spotting threads and weaving them together in clever ways
⚡ Adaptability — thriving in the grey space, not the neat boxes

Generalists bring breadth and depth. We’re the translators, the bridge-builders, the chaos-tamers — and honestly, we’re never bored.

Here’s to the generalists: the multi-hatters, the slash-career enthusiasts, and everyone out here making sense of the messy middle 🥂

And, thanks to the branding magic of Aron Dobrowolski, somehow the same same but different colour palettes makes it easier to use the same swag across multiple businesses 💃

Today is International Generalist Day.

And as a VA, I’m proud to say: I’m a generalist.

When I started out, everyone told me to niche. To “pick a lane.” To specialise.
But the truth is, being a generalist is my superpower.

It means I can:

🧩 Adapt quickly to different industries
🔎 Spot connections others might miss
🪄 Bring order to chaos across multiple areas of a business
🎯 Help clients see the bigger picture while still getting the details right

Some weeks, I’m diving into marketing. Others, it’s events, business development, or project management.

Can this make my messaging difficult? Perhaps.

But that mix is what makes the work exciting and is what makes me valuable to my clients.

So today, I’m celebrating the people who wear many hats, run with their curiosity, and thrive in the grey space between disciplines.

Generalists aren’t “unfocused.” We’re connectors. Problem-solvers. Strategists. With an excellent hat collection.

And the world (and business) needs more of us.

..... ACTUAL MAGIC! 🌀 ✨

Friends, strangers, humans of LinkedIn......

HAPPY INTERNATIONAL GENERALIST DAY!

A whooping 88 events are happening in 35+ countries around the world today. And I don't really have the words for how this makes me feel.

A bit emotional, if I'm honest 🥹

This morning's London event was expertly facilitated by Mildred with fab support from Ramona and Georgia.

And like all GW events, we cut past the surface-level BS and got to really connect, listen, laugh and help each other. Seeing this happen in realtime truly feels a bit magic. It's just so dang cool to see humans be genuine, kind, collaborative, and supportive.

To every generalist of the world, I SEE YOU! You are so so so not alone. This is your day. And this is our time.

To our brilliant hosts making this happen, THANK YOU THANK YOU! Truly floored at the effort and creativity you've put into this day.

To our dream partners who help make this possible, YOU DA BEST! Special s/out to Mindaugas Brenton Kayla Megan Charlie Katie

To our IGD team.. no words. Ece, Emily, Sarah - I simply couldn't do this without you!!!

Were you at an event today?! Meet me in the comments to tell me how it was!

Wow you know it’s a good meetup when you don’t take any photos because there’s soo much chatting going on!

It’s been a long time since I’ve met not only such a diverse group of people, but also people who were soo willing to share their stories beyond work. I’ve been craving that for a while and Generalist World 🌀 delivered!!

Many thanks to the hosts of the evening, both María Razquin Gómara and Laura Larsson for making this event possible tonight!!

It’s funny as someone who also loves to create experiences based on conversation cards, I can feel intimidated by them myself sometimes 🫣 But what helped was the pure openness from everybody I encountered, it just felt so easy and nice to offload different thoughts from our minds.

Perhaps because we all identify as generalists at heart, it made it that much easier to jump across such a wide spectrum of topics, especially personal, which I often find can be lacking here in Sweden.

Genuinely looking forward to the next one!! And here’s a pic at least on the way there and back - felt like I was somewhere much more international tonight - it was as refreshing as seeing the beautiful water that lay ahead of me 🌊

Have you ever felt like your career doesn’t fit into a straight line?

That’s exactly what being a generalist feels like, and today, on International Generalist Day, I want to celebrate that journey.

Inspired by Jenny Orlova, I reflected on my own path, which has taken me from:
📰 Journalism and magazine editing
🎤 PR, events, and marketing
💫 Fashion, Startups, volunteering
💻 Communications, tech writing, and editing
🌍 Across industries like media, publishing, oil & gas, science, the UN, academia, data science and tech.

The thread that connects all of this is a passion for communications with impact. Whether telling a story, building visibility, or creating meaningful connections, being a generalist isn’t about lacking focus. It’s about bridging worlds, connecting dots, and adapting to new challenges with creativity.

Generalists bring breadth, resilience, and fresh perspectives. In today’s complex world, that’s not just valuable, it’s essential.

Here’s to all the generalists making a difference today!

𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝘀 Generalist World 🌀 ‘s #𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗗𝗮𝘆

I have always come back to the question:
'𝘚𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘐 𝘣𝘦 𝘢 𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘵 𝘰𝘳 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘐 𝘣𝘦 𝘢 𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘵?'

Why? Because some of us do not fit nearly into one box.

As a generalist in HR ops, executive support and people projects, I love the variety.
I love moving between people, processes, projects and delivery, connecting the dots to create calm where others see only chaos

Because being a generalist isn't about 'doing a bit of everything'
✨It is about seeing the bigger picture.
✨It is about spotting the patterns.
✨It is about knowing how to connect pieces so that leaders can move forward with clarity

Generalists often get mistaken for jack of all trades.
But here is the truth:
👉Specialists go deep
👉 Generalists connect the dots

And as someone working in HR where the scope is wide, you have to shift gears quickly
It is often the generalist who acts like the 'glue', holding everything together so projects move, people are supported and strategy stays on track

At YVES, that is exactly the role I play:
❌Not a VA
❌ Not a HRVA
But a S𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿, the one behind the scenes who connects the dots, turns the big picture strategy into actionable steps and makes things happen

✨ What a joy to celebrate #InternationalGeneralistDay with fellow generalists here in Austin! 🌎 🌀

We gathered for a casual lunch at Fixe Austin’s Southern House, where conversation flowed easily, and a few fun starter cards sparked stories, insights, and plenty of laughter. Thank you, Fixe, for the warm hospitality — you made us feel so welcome, and the food and service were amazing! 😋

We connected, swapped ideas, and shared our wonderfully squiggly career paths — and for me, this has been especially meaningful. Through Generalist World 🌀, I finally feel seen and proud of my own squiggly journey. As someone who’s never fit neatly into a single predefined career box, it was affirming and energizing to be surrounded by others who thrive at intersections, adapt with ease, wear many hats, and fully embrace being generalists. 🙌

💜 Thank you to everyone who joined and brought such warmth, curiosity, and openness to the table — tagging y'all here: Allison Dono, Sharon Connor, Erin Autin, Margaret Dickinson, Natalie Collins, Tammy Lynn Gilmore, and Hana Nesbitt!

Here’s to more connections, more stories, and more squiggly-tastic gatherings in the future!

Ever since I was 17, I've identified as a generalist. Back then, I made a decision: I wanted to be someone who knows a little about a lot. But over time, that idea evolved. It’s not just about having broad knowledge anymore. It’s about looking beyond the obvious, spotting connections others might miss, and pulling insights from different domains.

Being a generalist means I'm adaptable, a fast learner, and endlessly curious and I’ve come to realize those are the traits that connect generalists all over the world.

I once mentioned that I felt like a strange duck and that with Generalist World 🌀 is like finding the right pond with all amazing Duckies 🦆 . It's true, after 2.5 years I keep being amazed at how naturally I connect with old and new people in the community. It's a space I'm proud of. A space I work rather hard for (still have some cool projects coming up 😉 )

Today is not only a celebratory day for this amazing community. It's a testament to everyone who embraces their squiggly careers. Who are not afraid to go against the tide because they know they can bring value. Today it's about celebrating who you are.

International Generalist Day 🌀 everyone!

p.s. A little shoutout to the people who have made this journey amazing so far: Milly, Ece, Ramiro you three are heroes and I'm glad to call you all my friends!

I have always had so many interests. This was reflected from my optional courses at uni to my career path. I was a bit embarrassed about that before, as everyone seemed to be a specialist. I then learnt that I am a "generalist", thanks to Generalist World 🌀, during their great speed networking events.

I learnt to be proud of this. It is not a weakness, but a strength. As a generalist, I can connect the dots between different fields. I also always bring a fresh, original perspective to the table. It is especially useful in my work as a Mentor and Adviser.

Today is International Generalist Day. To mark the occasion, there will be community events where lots of people will get together in person, across 35 countries, in 88 locations. Check the link in the comments to find an event in your local area. Let's celebrate being a generalist! 🥳

Celebrating the International Generalist Day in Edinburgh! 🎉

A huge thank you to everyone who came along - it was so energising to connect with fellow generalists who bring breadth, adaptability, and creativity to everything they do. 🥰

Being a generalist isn’t about squeezing into one tidy box. As the brilliant Milly Tamati at Generalist World 🌀 reminds us, generalism is a superpower, bringing multi-dimensional perspectives and versatility is exactly what today’s world needs.

Here’s to celebrating squiggly 🌀 careers around the world (80+ meetups in 35 countries)! 🍾

And a special thanks to Milly and Ece for creating this day and giving us the space to connect, learn, and celebrate together - and to my wonderful co-host Kelly, it's been fun co-creating this experience!💙

Last but not least, a shoutout to the incredible Sarah Thomson and Chaophraya for hosting us and surprising us with sharing platters. It's so wonderful to meet people that care about giving good experiences and supporting the community spirit 💛

We did it: the very first Generalist World 🌀 International Generalist Day in Paris!

A cozy café off-campus, a table of 6 generalists full of curious, squiggly-career people, and within minutes we were diving into ten different worlds at once.

No small talk, just great energy, lots of fun stories, and a lot of nodding along because, we've all had similar feelings throughout our careers as generalists.

Here's a few awesome stories from our tiny, but might gathering,

→ Kayla Collingwood shared with us her passion and work in opera singing, but also dive into ux design for singers wanting a website
→ Narizza Septianti told us about her love for Paris after visiting from Indonesia where she worked in the Movie Distribution industry, and how she pivoted by going back to study when landing in France!
→ Michael Cavallo had so many great questions and thoughts about AI that of course we had to dive into the "A.Generalist.I" convo
→Daniel Rasbash made us dream sharing about his childhood traveling the world and current job planning intense events
Olga Dobrovidova gave us a glimpse into her world of connecting science and politics/policies journalism
Bailey told us all about SheFi which she is taking classes with and how it energised her !

Yep, all these stories and moments of connections reminded me that this is why communities exist, the best part is really that:

→ You don’t need to explain why you’re into five things at once
→ You can toss a half-baked idea on the table and watch it spark
→ You know how to help out someone who's been there

If you’ve ever felt “too much” or “too many,” find a community that feels like home, because the right people don’t just get you - they remind you that, in this case, your curiosity is your superpower!

What communities are you part of? 💬

Today I had the joy of hosting Canberra’s very first International Generalist Day meet-up 🌏🌀

As a connector at heart, I loved bringing together a small group of curious, creative humans to share stories, swap career paths, and celebrate the many hats we wear.

It was a windy, cool day here on Ngunnawal and Ngambri Country, but getting outside, moving our bodies, and learning about each other’s squiggly careers made it so worth it! The coffee + banana bread pit stop in the sun didn’t hurt either ☕🍌🍞

What struck me most was how quickly people found common ground, even with such different backgrounds. That’s the magic of being a generalist - we thrive at the intersections.

Big thanks to Jennifer Faerber, Simon Le, Tim Dingwall, Mark Chenery, Claire Toepfer, Caterina Giorgi, and Damien Letcher for coming along.

And shout out to Generalist World 🌀 for sparking this global celebration across 30+ countries and 80+ cities today. I’m already looking forward to the next one!

Everyone picked two prompts they were most interested in discussing. They then found someone who’d chosen one of the same cards and chatted for 15 minutes. Afterwards, they repeated the process with their second card and a new partner. This structure takes some of the intimidation out of mingling and gives people both autonomy and a clear starting point for conversation! It sparked discussions ranging from using self-driving cars as an analogy for where human touch is needed, the challenges of drive a broad skill set into a job where everything is a competition, to sharing resources and swapping notes on favourite whiskey brands 🥃. Conversation starters for tonight's Generalist World 🌀 meetup. It's always a great bunch of people at these events and a great conversation, tonight focused on the future of work. My favourite topic was what trends give you hope for the future?  The other topic I chose was "the human advantage". One of the questions that came up while discussing this topic was that if we all use AI to draft our email and polish our writing, and all start to sound the same, what will we lose in our language and culture?   If you've got thoughts on these topics feel free to drop a comment below!

Do I really think I can do it all?
linkedin
Do I really think I can do it all? Honestly… yes. Some might call it crazy. But I call it energising. Being a generalist is who I am and I’ve stopped trying to explain or justify it. I’ve had this conversation a hundred times, but last Monday something clicked. The lovely team at Generalist World 🌀 kicked off their Summer School with a Skill Stacking Workshop at Canva HQ and WOW. How do they keep raising the bar? From the moment I walked in, I felt it: warmth, curiosity, excitement. No one asked, “So… what do you do?” Instead, the questions were: 💬 What excites you? 💬 What do you value? As someone who runs and attends nearly 20 events a month (Yes, really. I sleep. Barely.), I was genuinely impressed. It was intimate, well-paced, and incredibly connective. I spoke to almost everyone, and we all left with valuable new friendships and conversations that haven’t left my mind since. One thing that stood out? 🧠 Most generalists are driven by mission, not job titles. We want to contribute, connect, build, support. We wear many hats but all in service of something greater than ourselves. It’s no surprise I saw so many familiar faces from Led by Community C.I.C Community Week (yes, I still owe a post about that soul-filling week!). 💛 Huge thanks to Ece Kurtaraner & Mildred C. for leading such a thoughtful event and for curating incredible content for the Summer School. And of course Milly Tamati for bringing all of us generalists together. So far we've had: ✨ “Build Thriving Communities” by Zach Hawtof from Tightknit 📓 “The Notion Playbook for Portfolio Pros” by Nikita Khandwala & Dave Mence 🤖 and I can’t wait for tonight’s "Build Your AI Teammate: create, customise & monetise AI agents" session by Cien S. from LaunchLemonade🍋 (the morning session has been a hit from what I hear 👀) Anyway… this is your sign to embrace your "chaos", lean into what energises you, and find your people. To my fellow generalists: You’re not crazy for wanting to do it all. You’re wired differently and that’s exactly what the world needs. (Yes, I'm chaotic. Yes, this post reflects that. No apologies.)

Making things clearer so people can feel more confident is a biiiig energiser of mine (esp. when it comes to all things sustainability, brands & what we eat). But it was coming across this framework last week that really helped me realise it 👇 The ‘aha!’ came at the Generalist World 🌀 summer school where I got to have some mind-expanding chats and discover the '4Cs' framework to help you get clear on what you offer (especially if you feel you don’t fit the normal boxes). So if you feel outside the box, try this skill stacking to help you define what you 𝘥𝘰 𝘧𝘪𝘵. ✨ 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹: what skill are you or do you want to be famous for? ✨ 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹: what’s the unexpected twist that makes your take on your core skill special? ✨ 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹: what human skills are you great at that help you deliver what needs to be done? ✨ 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹: where are you best at doing it? Whether it’s sector, team size or working environment. So what are your 4Cs? I’m still musing on mine, but it’s definitely rooted in giving people more confidence around their brands and sustainability in the most impactful context: our food system. I’m also totally pro less hustle, more hugs. Thanks to Sharon Milone Anaïs Comot Nyasha Duri Natasha Hayles Lindsay Kershaw Abby Brosgill Leila Nithila-George Alex Ashford Branislav (Branny) Pencak and Georgia Hirth for helping hold up the mirror! Intrigued? Give me a shout if you fancy a chat, or for more info on the 4C’s, I'll share Milly Tamati's great post in the comments.

On Monday, I had an incredible time at Generalist World 🌀's Summer School of Generalist Skills kick-off workshop! Hosted by Ece Kurtaraner and Mildred C. in partnership with Canva and Lovable, the day was all about discovering your unique skill stack. I had so many great conversations with fellow multifaceted, interesting people – many at a career crossroads – all looking to carve out paths that don't fit into a rigid box. It was fantastic to hear about some really cool projects, organisations (like Impactic) and initiatives that people are working on. There was a clear and powerful theme emerging: people want to create a positive impact and empower others, and they’re finding truly unconventional, inspiring ways to do it. During the workshop, we learned how to identify the patterns in our life and career experiences to determine our most valuable skills to effectively package ourselves in a way that best communicates our value. Being at the Canva offices once again felt like a full-circle moment for me, as the last time I was there in March, we were having similar conversations about the value of generalist skills. It’s a concept also championed by creators Dan Koe and Adama L., whose content I love and learn so much from. The final image slide, created by the amazing Generalist world founder, Milly Tamati, contains a super useful list of actionable ways to best leverage skill stacking. I'm keeping this somewhere visible as a reminder! I’m excited for the upcoming programme of events. The right career opportunity won’t find you because of your experience.
linkedin
The right career opportunity won’t find you because of your experience. It’ll find you because of how you own your path. Positioning is what makes your non-linear career story click. And yesterday, I saw two versions of it in real time. At the Generalist World 🌀 event, two people with similar backgrounds in design, research and tech had ended up in wildly different roles: → One’s now a Creative Engineer → The other, a Product Manager Same roots. Different paths. Because one thing made all the difference: 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆. Whether you’re searching for a new role, project or connection... Positioning shapes who leans in vs. who tunes out. 🟢 Clear positioning makes the right people say: “Tell me more.” 🔴 Vague positioning makes them wonder why you’re in the room. Your job? To connect the dots between where you’ve been, how you think and what you’re ready to do next, so others can clearly see your value. But here’s what I've seen most people overlook: It’s not just about clarity on paper. It’s about the energy you carry into every interaction. And specifically: 1. 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵. The difference between shrinking to fit the job description… or recognising that your lived experience, your way of thinking, your perspective is the value. → When you own that, your confidence becomes contagious. 2. 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲. How you hold yourself when you walk into the room, how attuned you are to the energy around you and how you adapt, not by contorting yourself, but by staying grounded in who you are. → People feel that and they adjust how they show up in response. 3. 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴. Not just listing skills but knowing why they matter in this context. The ability to say: → “Here’s the unique set of problems I'm uniquely placed to solve and here’s why it works for this opportunity,” with clarity and conviction. When this inner alignment is clear, the outer opportunities start to make sense. Until these deeper forces are addressed, no framework will stick. Because positioning isn’t just what you say. It’s HOW you say it and believe it. That’s what turns: “I’ve done a bit of everything…” Into: “I’m a systems thinker who thrives at the intersection of design, AI and strategy.” Big difference. Same experience. New outcome. Strong positioning is being the right fit for the right problem in the right context. And it's your job to turn your non-linear career path into your unfair advantage. How can you start? → By positioning your diversity as an asset, not a liability. From that energy: alignment, clarity and ease become possible. Thank you Ece & Mildred for hosting such an amazing event and bringing together such kind, mission- and impact-driven people. 💬 What’s your take on positioning? Which point resonated most? 1, 2 or 3?

Video transcript: I had the pleasure of going to one of the Chicago meetups and just being like, oh, these are my people. And getting to hear some of people's experience who are actually community members. And I think there was just still a lot of spaciousness. I mentioned earlier, one of my biggest conflicts was feeling like I didn't have a place where I belonged in many parts of my career. And this is a place where I do feel like I belong. There are people who have full time jobs, there are people who are business owners, there are people who are portfolio careers. And even if not everyone's career looks exactly like mine. And really that's kind of the whole thing with a generalist, is that you're having a one on one career. I can talk about having multiple things happening and no one bats an eye. It's not like, wait, what are you doing? And so kind kind of similar to what you were saying with being on a panel and feeling comfortable enough, taking up space. It feels like a space where I can take up space and bring the nuances in the intricacies of my career without being worried about people having blank stares or like tilting their head in confusion. No, you'll just end up in the heck yeah channel. Like.

And she was like, well, that's because you're a generalist. You need to check out this generalist world. I was like, this is what I need. And I found it to be a really the right community for me because I've been craving a team, and I feel like I have a team now. I have three, two other people. The three of us check in every week. We have a call for almost a year now. And they just. They feel like. I know, right? They feel like they are my business buddies. They're totally on my team. They give me reality checks when I need them. Like, Tara, why do you actually think that that's not really true? And they. Yeah, they just are so supportive, really strong, brainstorming people with me, like, it's team that I needed. Been a real game changer for me because I can keep doing my solo entrepreneur thing because I've got a team behind me now.

Video transcript: There's thousands of us out there while we're under this great big generalist umbrella. There's specialist generalists within us, right? There are those who are, you know, entrepreneurs. There are those of us who are creatives. But learning from how everyone does everything is just amazing. To your point, Like Sharon, with this crazy Ph.D. the most brilliant. I literally have to pause and take so much time to read the things he posts because I have to use my brain in a different way to do that, because he's so brilliant. And then you've got someone like Robert, who will just ask you questions and turn your mind upside down. And then you're like, oh, my God, how did I not think of this? Right? Yeah, it's really the strange community. And knowing that we're there and that we are all in the same boat, although very different.

The past few weeks, I've been #Unboxed 🎁 - You know, learning never stops!

Are you a dreamer, an overachiever, an organiser, a creative, the glue, confused, the non- traditional,....

Are you often labelled this way or any other way at work?

I take pride in most of these titles :)

You get to choose the title that you want to choose.

As I've said countless times here, I don't have a linear career path and by the looks of it, I never will.

Also, I know that there is NO single path to success; I've experienced this myself.

The past few weeks, I've been Unboxed. The program by Generalist World 🌀 was a great reminder of a lot of things that I already believed in.

Great interactions with people who are so massively talented in their own way!

Some aspects covered - Storytelling, Skills stacking, pitching, creating tiny experiments, atomic influence and more. Gosh! I needed this nudge and support.

And now here I am, motivated to continue to be my unique self and tell YOU-reading this, that being authentic, taking small steps towards your goals, being consistent and surrounding yourself with the RIGHT kind of people is the way to go!

Thank you beautiful community Generalist World 🌀. I would tag each one of you if I could. You inspire me!

Meeting others in the community willing to help, also sometime sharing something out loud to a group can give you a different prespective about how you've been approaching something. I learnt that perhaps I've been thinking a little too narrowly on the 'One-Liner" - you can have a few (!) Also plan to watch back as there were some great nuggets of advice in there!

The power of generalists in a world that won’t sit still: their insight, generosity and hustle 🌀

At this event last week by Generalist World 🌀 and Freshminds the all-star, all-female panel brought together searing hot takes, practical wisdom and truly innovative perspectives to help generalists thrive. All with a refreshing blend of intellect, humour and self-awareness that lit up the room 🙌🏻

So much gold was shared, but my personal highlights:

Adwoa Osei with the best quotes: You have to stay ready, for those moments when the world stops. Choose your hard.
And always pitch yourself in 🏆

Suzy Lockwood shared insights from a founder set on changing the world oe changing an industry (I loved hearing more about the journey with ditto!): be prepared, bring your data. Generalists have a superpower on interdisciplinary project teams, as freelancers and contingent talent, so lean into that.

Neda Sahebelm brought sage advice for anyone starting a fractional offering: work isn’t an emergency. We never learn how to communicate our value unless we work in sales, so go get those skills. A compelling offer is specific, so reduce the cognitive load for any prospective clients, leaders or customers.

Nikita Khandwala brought the energy with expert facilitation and provocation: what’s one thing you could do tomorrow that doesn’t require anyone’s permission? Milly Tamati got us all hyped about the future of work in collaborative, community-led growth. And the crowd was fantastic as usual, sharing books, resources and honest reflections.

Overall the panel highlighted what happens when you bring together high agency, low ego people from diverse backgrounds, with a strong provocation and an appreciative audience. Great work by all involved!

If you only go to events for a clear outcome: networking, job leads, new clients. You’re missing the magic.

You don’t need the perfect pitch.
You don’t need a strategic agenda.
You don’t need to force connections.

→ You just need to put yourself in the right rooms and be fully engaged.

That’s exactly what happened at the Generalist World 🌀 event on Wednesday.

I walked in with no agenda.
No pressure to “make something happen.”

And yet by the end of the night?

→ I walked away with 5+ new connections, insights I’ll carry forward and conversations that opened doors I didn’t even know existed.

This is what happens when you stop chasing and start being present.

The first person I spoke to? Yasminca.
We didn’t talk about work.
We talked about historical novels.

📚 (The Nightingale, specifically: one of my favourite books that I brought as part of the event’s book exchange.)

Then came the Panel.

A free-flowing conversation, beautifully facilitated by Nikita, featuring 3 inspiring women.

One question stood out to me:

→ "What’s the red thread that ties all of your experiences together in your career?"

I ask my clients this all the time.

Because if you don’t know your own throughline, how can you own your value? How can you create opportunities that actually fit?

Later, another unexpected connection.

I met Jiten.

We talked about presence in leadership.
About actually caring about people.
About how real influence isn’t about control.
It’s about connection.

And just as the night was winding down…
The magic continued.

On the tube platform, one last surprise.
I ran into two people from the event.

We started chatting.
And it turns out, one of them grew up
in the same city as me: Taipei 🇹🇼

All because I asked: “Where’s home for you?”

This is the part no one talks about.

The synchronicities.
The unexpected conversations.
The kind of moments you can’t script or force.

And this is why I tell my clients:

→ Go to things that interest you. Without an agenda.
→ Wander. Explore. Lead with curiosity.
→ Get out of your head and into the spaces where serendipity happens.

Because when you do, you walk away with more than you ever planned for.

This is what it means to play bigger.

Milly + team, this was an exceptional event.
Thank you for bringing such brilliant humans together.
Can’t wait for the next one.

"Generalists are just jack-of-all-trades, master of none."

Suzy Lockwood flipped the myth on its head this week at a packed event by Generalist World 🌀 at x+why, a BCorp coworking and community space that I always love going to.

📢 Generalists aren't master of none, we’re masters of many.

The best leaders aren’t the ones locked into a single function - they’re the ones who understand how the whole business fits together.

Standing in a room of 60+ multi-talented, multi-passionate people, felt like stepping into a space where generalists just get it - ideas bouncing off the walls, careers that don’t fit into neat boxes, and a shared appreciation for wearing many hats.

The incredible Adwoa Osei, Suzy Lockwood, and Neda Sahebelm took to the stage to talk about the red threads that have connected their careers and the inflection points where they had no choice but to pivot.

Because let’s be honest - if you’re a generalist, change isn’t a roadblock; it’s part of the ride.

📌 Neda, keeping it real: "It took me six months to get paid because it took me six months to figure out how to talk to people so I get paid."
That was a reminder that being great at many things isn’t enough - you have to learn how to position it, so others see the value too.

📌 And then there was Adwoa Osei, who shared a simple but brilliant pro tip: "Make a list of 15 people you want to work with. Start from number 15 - by the time you reach number 1, your pitch will be much stronger."
It's such a practical way to refine your messaging while building connections along the way.

For a long time, I saw being a generalist as something I had to explain, maybe even justify.

But after this event (thanks Milly Tamati Ece Kurtaraner Nikita Khandwala 🙌), I’ve felt something shift - being a generalist isn’t a weakness. It’s a wild, exciting advantage.

It’s adaptability, big-picture thinking, and the ability to connect the dots that others miss.

The key? Owning it, articulating it, and making sure the right people understand what you bring to the table.

P.S.: Guess what book I brought for the event book swap (check the last pic with the book pile) 👀

🌀 Generalists thrive on connection, curiosity, and conversation, and last night's Generalist World Melbourne meetup was full of all three!

With a mix of familiar and new faces, the energy in the room was incredible. People were feeling heard, inspired, and genuinely excited to network.
I know that networking can sometimes feel awkward or intimidating, so we designed the night to make it easier to engage through prompt cards, rotating discussions, and lots of opportunities to connect beyond the usual “so, what do you do?” Some people even took the prompt cards home to use in other life situations, which honestly feels like the most generalist thing ever.

Throughout the night, we heard ideas spanning designing safety into products, how language learning apps could improve, portfolio careers, sustainability impact, financial literacy, how we showcase other expertise and more! But what stood out most was how easily generalists cross disciplines and make unexpected connections.

Since this meetup is by the community, for the community, I also gathered insights on what people want next:

🌀 Generalists love topic-driven meetups. And the most common topics people wanted to see in future events was sustainability, AI, storytelling, and business impact!

💡 Portfolio careers are common. Many attendees juggle multiple income streams or unconventional career paths, so these meetups feel like a space where that experience is understood.

🤝  There’s a demand for variety in event formats. People are keen for a mix of catch-ups around drinks, hands-on workshops, and collaborations with other communities.

And in the spirit of cross-pollination, we even joined forces with People Planet Pint who also had their meet-up yesterday, which led to even more unexpected and brilliant conversations, turns out, that there’s a lot of synergy in bringing these two communities together.

🤔 If you’re a generalist (or generalist-curious), I’d love to hear from more of you, what kinds of topics or formats would you like to see in future meetups?
_______________________________________________________________
If you or your workplace would like to support these meetups with space, food, or drinks, I’d love to chat.

Big thanks to Skye Bennett , Matt Bray & Jacinta Y. and everyone who came along! Keep an eye out for future events via myself, Skye, and lu.ma.

Ever felt like you don’t fit into a single box?

☝️ This was me for most of my life and very recently I had the great privilege to connect with other likeminded jack-of-all-trades folks at Generalist World 🌀 hosted by Melanie Calleja and Skye Bennett, where I got to meet some of the most curious, multi-faceted, and brilliant minds in Melbourne including:

🛠️ Designers from the enterprise, digital, and physical product space.
🚀 Entrepreneurs and VC partners from around Australia and the US.
🧠 Creative strategists who thrive in ambiguity and complexity.
and many more!

We swapped our stories, ideas, and insights 💬 building on our collective point of view that being a generalist is not because we lack depth or specialisations... rather it's because we can weave together our diverse skills, experiences, and perspectives to create 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 and do the things that only we can do going beyond just a specific job title, skill, or industry.

What stood out the most for me? The magic of serendipitous connection ✨
In a world where our journeys and careers have infinite possibilities, I find the best way to progress forward is having a open and growth mindset while:
✔️ Bringing others on your journey
✔️ Sharing knowledge and wisdom
✔️ Lifting each other up for success

From design thinking to our passions and business trends across Asia, America, Europe and Australia... every conversation ignited something new.

💚 During the event, we were joined by our awesome friends at People Planet Pint - where I had the pleasure of meeting Matt Bray and their group of passionate humans who are helping drive impactful sustainable change for people, environment and planet.

If you are someone who loves to connect the dots between disciplines, industries, and ideas, then I highly recommend you to join us next time at Generalist World 🌀 + People Planet Pint! I can guarantee you will have conversations and 'a-ha!' moments that is irreplicable by AI. Huge thanks again to Melanie, Skye, and Matt for such a fun and meaningful evening.

Let's celebrate being a generalist, supporting human connection and keeping weird, fun, and exciting conversations happening!

At all stages of my career, whether Social Impact or Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, I've found that to do well, I needed to become a generalist- even though I hadn't heard the term until recent years.

I think many of us can relate to our jobs requiring so many more skills then may be obvious from what it 'says on the tin,' & that this is ever evolving.

It was fantastic to learn more about an entire generalist community at the Generalist World 🌀, 'The Power of Generalists in a World That Won't Sit Still' event, in partnership with Freshminds. Shout out to the incredible panellists and organisers.

For me, it's data analyst, strategist, project manager & business partner as just a few hats. The skills development is continuous, but I left reflecting on how from all of this, I can focus on communicating specific, data-informed, value.

Enjoyed last night’s Generalist World 🌀 and Freshminds networking event (hosted in an excellent x+why space).

An important concept I took away was challenging the idea that generalists are jack of all trades (master of none), with the fact that they are often masters of multiple (or even many) areas.

Combining this with the comments on T-shaped experience and expertise (broad and deep) made me think about the challenge of occasionally communicating my value on introduction calls to new clients or partners.

I have covered multiple subareas within life science (Pharma, Medtech and Dx), using various research techniques (Quant and Qual MR, Competitive Intelligence, Scientific Research, workshops) for clients in different functions (BD, Brand, Insights, Corporate Strategy, Medical Affairs, and R&D) and across the entirety of the product lifecycle (Preclinical, clinical, launch, mature, generic).

However, the deep thread across the 80+ projects that make up this experience, is the skill set to rapidly spot patterns and understand external dynamics, which is essential in solving bespoke client problems as they advance solutions for unmet medical needs.

Thank you to the hosts and the panel!

What an evening - Freshminds x Generalist World 🌀 felt like a bit of a match made in heaven!

We see every day just how important and valuable this skillset is at Freshminds - our clients know what a superpower it is in our consultants. And so, we’ll keep flying the flag for this epic skill set because it’s not just important—it’s integral to the future of work.

The dot-connectors, strategists, and operators—these are often the magicians behind solving today’s biggest challenges in organisations. And you better believe they’re the kind of folk who will roll up their sleeves and get the job done. With so many unknowns ahead, they might quickly become the type of skillset you'll struggle to live without.

Massive shout out to Milly Tamati, Ece Kurtaraner and the GW team for a fantastic evening, and to the rest of the panel Adwoa Osei, Neda Sahebelm and Nikita Khandwala - I learnt so much sitting next to you (an honour!) and hearing your golden nuggets of wisdom.

Favourite takeaway :
How do you get true innovation when everyone thinks the same way? You need fresh perspectives to challenge the status quo. If you only hire people who are like you and think like you, you can't objectively claim you've found the best solution (you'll likely reach a local minima).

Without diverse viewpoints, you won't see beyond the obvious. Consider how bringing new minds into the room can accelerate progress and help your team discover breakthrough solutions.

Great insights in data/metrics, fractional roles, "always being ready", high performing orgs and your "minimum viable offer" as a generalist.

Video transcript: What would I tell my younger self about career development? I would tell my younger self to just keep doing what you did. I think it has been fascinating to follow my gut to do what I thought was right at that point in my career. I wouldn't change a thing. There were many people who questioned me and said, what is she doing with her life? Where is she heading to? Or she doesn't have enough experience, or what have you done at all? But then there were also a lot of people who were fascinated by my journey and wanted to talk to me and wanted to interview me and even hired me and are still hiring me. So I was just telling my younger self to keep going. Believe in yourself. And also you are capable of making money. You're capable of solving problems, and you should just keep going. Do what you are good at.

Video transcript: I really discovered my generalist superpowers when I finished grad school and graduated into the pandemic. Nobody was hiring. I'd studied public policy and housing policy and economic trends and analysis. But really the only company that would hire me at the time was an E commerce company that sold stuff on Amazon and Shopify. But I discovered that the same Python kind of programming skills, data analysis skills, A, B testing and all of that that I learned in grad school actually became really relevant when I was working at this E commerce company. Same thing goes for a lot of the, like stakeholder management that I was, that I had kind of developed in my prior career in urban planning and community engagement. I was able to deploy that when I worked in a corporate environment working with like VPs and C Suite folks and external kind of customers who, you know, were more in a, in a corporate setting. But those same skills, the analysis, the stakeholder management, all that stuff that I had never thought of before as being useful for business, it was really just like something that I use in urban planning and public policy actually really helped me stand out. And I've seen this sort of trend in my own career several times since then, whether it's programming and analysis later kind of startup experience, being helpful later in building communities and other types of projects I've worked on. And it just kind of keeps coming up where as I develop new skills, learn new things, learn new experiences, there are always ways that they interconnect and can build upon one another. And it's not always expected, but it's, it's something that I'm really grateful for and I think gives me a ton of optionality and power in whatever I do in my career.
